G506
Located in a scrap yard off the A1. Sad end for this Lightning.................. LB, is this for sale? Could it be rescued and saved?
Lord Burley
LB,is this for sale? Could it be rescued and saved? No. It was originally bought by the scrap yard owner as a gimmick. But over the years its been plundered and vandalised.
G506
What a shame, not enough of these left to allow a surviving example to fade away
Lord Burley
Mike "Beachy" Head at Thunder City in SA had 4 flying examples up until last month. When one was lost in a tragic airshow accident killing the pilot. I believe the 2 examples at Bruntingthorpe are fully airworthy. But the CAA wont agree type approval for it to fly. Some more pics of Lightning languishing by the A1..... The Lightning being lifted on to its new home in the scrappys circa 1983 And happier times. The same Lightning during its flying career........... Along with the SR71 Blackbird. I'm just lucky enough to have seen these fly during there time in service. Most memorable was seeing 2 of them take off from Mildenhall in 86,and see them pull the stick back and go full nose up on re-heat. The rate of climb was something else. And i dont think there was a car on the base that day that didnt have its alarm going.
Jonny666
the A1 lightening used to be painted every year by the scrap yard owner till he died i believe well thats what my dad tells me anyway now the "kids" think its a tagging wall
daz76
Sad to see it in that state now. I remember it in the condition it was in being delivered as I used to travel that way a lot as a boy.
Bystander
LB,is this for sale? Could it be rescued and saved? There are more worthy candidates with an uncertain future, notably the Binbrook F6, which was a runner. See this: http://www.thunder-and-lightnings.co.uk/lightning/survivors.php for a list of the survivors

25 pounder
I bought a pair of wheels , plain rubber , on very heavy solid steel rims , Tyres are made by "VORWERK" (german manufacturer before WW 2) with inscription "6 m/kg" Does anybody know what these wheels used to carry ????? Enigma
The German wheels look like the ones on a Panzer 4.
25 pounder
You probably got that impression because they are stapled one on another , I rather think they belonged to an artillery piece , also visible , several bullet impacts on the rubber,:-\ they are to big/wide to belong on the Panzer
25 pounder
another one of my discoveries , a water bowser , poor state but restorable , water tank is in perfect condition (interior, outside could use a layer of paint !!)
