The last K9 radio vehicles in service with the Regular Army were held by 8 Signal Regiment in Catterick (the trade training unit of the Royal Signals then). Three were held by "Schemes Troop". They were basically stripped out (but fitted with a TTVF4/12 - a telegraph conversion set) and mainly used as luggage carriers when taking trainees out in the field to exercise under "realistic" conditions. They were still on strength when I demobbed in late 1980.

One thing I noticed is that one or two of the K9 RAF ambulances seem to have survived - but to date I haven't seen a preserved Army ambulance. They did exist, with slightly different bodywork. I saw a whole yard full of them in Catterick eons ago, and whilst in the Outer Hebrides (1969-71) we had one assigned to the RAGW Range to temporarily replace our Bedford J1, which was in the workshops. Are there any out there in captivity?

Heres a teaser for you the K9 as a prototype 6 wheeler, now i dont know if one of the rear axles was trailing or it was a 6x6 interesting project though

"Douglas equipment" / "Douglas all wheel drive" converted a number of K9's to six wheel drive. I will try to post a picture later today.

F.L.Douglas of Arle Cheltenham converted a number of vehicles to 6X6.

These included this Austin K9, which definitely is a 6x6.

Douglas Equipment also converted the Austin Loadstar to a 4x4 configuration (but seeing as this must have been virtually the K9 in another form, I can't really see why they went to the effort)

I am guessing they upgraded the braking system. It appears to be a vacuum tank mounted on the nearside chassis rail, at the back of the cab.

They also converted the Bedford RL and other Bedford models (including the TK to 6x6 configuration)

This Bedford has a bridge plate fitted suggesting the convertion was done for the Army??

Douglas of course built the 4X4 and 6x6 "Transporter" and "Logger" Chassis. The name given to Bogey that formed the basis of the 6x6 Bedford and Austin convertion , was appropraitely called "The Converter" bogey.

The Conversion also included building the vehicle up on new Chassis rails, but knowing Douglas, they probably reused the Austin and Bedford cross members.

I am not sure whther the K9 you posted is their handywork though.

Douglas have had a variety of names."F.L. Douglas", "Douglas Equipment" "Douglas All Wheel Drive" they still exist today.
