I have insured my trucks with footmans james my classic cars and my bikes for the past 10 plus years, i get a letter today that they will not insure my son anymore as they do not do people under 25...they have insured him for the past two years...what a pain...tried Adrian Flux but they will only do Bradley on his own if he has the vehicles registered in his name and is the keeper of the vehicles, what a load of get out of paying twaddle that is...

so now i am on the hunt for a new insurance company, ...

I had the same problem with Footman James earlier this year. Had no joy with any of the so-called military vehicle specialists, so I asked a colleague to have a look at it for me ( I work in the insurance industry, sorry!). She arranged me a policy with KGM which included my son at less than half of what Footman James charged me the previous year. If you can't find a local broker who deals with KGM, try having a word with Diane Jackson at Harrington Bates Ltd on 01423 526333 - I can't promise she will be able to help but it is worth a try if it gets you the cover you need.

Hope you manage to get it sorted.

Mike.

It's endemic Tony and not just concerning classic vehicles either .

I've seen the insurance on my Mitsubishi Pick Up go from about 280 quid 5 years ago to nearly 700 now........had to move 3 times because the other companies decided they weren't going to cover 'commercial vehicles' or they didn't like my occupation ....

I've not had an accident (touch wood) since 1988 ....I have full no claims and am over 50 years old........

You tell me how they work it out mate......like someone else said........they make the rules up as they go along .....>:(

thanks guys premium choice on the list will try KGM too...insurance is a scam in the UK...in Germany you insure a vehicle...then if anyone drives it it is insured...easy peasey, no rip off prices for young drivers, no stupid policies for the older people. As insurance was designed the sharing of the paments makes it cheaper for everyone...this is how it should be..

a community shares the costs...it is not about paying for what we use...

I'm not sure I would want to pay the same as if an 18 year old were driving. I'm not for one moment saying they are all cr*p drivers but the cost of their polices indicate's that..........

Performance Direct has been brilliant, no noticeable increases in last 7 years and very reasonable for all kinds of MV's classics and bikes.

No idea of their policy's towards younger drivers but worth a call I would bet.

driver skills nothing to do with why we have insurance...insurance is a scheme that everyone pays into and the few need from time to time...it should be a fixed price for every vehicle, not on the driver, with perhaps a variance for value and or size/age...it should not depend upon the drivers skill because even the best drivers make the odd mistake now and again,...hence why we have insurance...

what we have in the UK is a prejudiced nd out of control system that is run by money grabbing insuarance companies that do not provide the service we want...this should be simplified and changed...would be very easy to do..and then we would have no cars running around without insurance...easy job to tell and no need to stop drivers all the time to check documents...

traffic police would be almost redundant....crime stats would half and they could focus on something else...

are you seriously saying that a 22 year old insuring a bmw m3 should pay the same as a 51 year old?,its all about risk , which one do you think is a greater risk?

The trouble is,younger drivers, like myself, get tarnished with the same statement as above. My renewal price went up this year despite having an extra year no claims and experience on the road (seven years now). Not all 20 something's are boyracers. I see plenty of the older generation :D breaking the speed limit up and down the land most times I go out on the road.

Depends on the driver. I have seen some aweful drivers , of the older generation, who should know better.

once again its about insurable risk ,gathered from claim statistics i am sure you are a great driver:cool2:

What you mean the ones that they make up or are over inflated by the insurance companies paying people to persuade you to make claims for injuries you did not receive. I have at least one a week these days. All because I stopped for a suicidal cyclist on a roundabout and the car behind did not quite. According to them slight discomfort counts even if you do not remember having it.

Maybe I am doing something wrong they even record the call and there seems to be no putting them off.

Phrase like "the only pain I had was earache and a twinge in the neck from answering the phone to people wanting me to commit fraud" just seem to go straight passed them.

Always have found the pricing a bit wierd with no logic. Worked with a bloke whose insurance doubled upon telling them his revised address. He had not moved the post office gave them a new postcode.

Brother ended up paying double to insure a 1.3 Escort van after he lost his job and had to sell his Firebird. Yes that is probably statistics they have had loads of claims for Escort vans but no on a Firebird.

Why does my renewal come back at £400 but if I go online for a quote, with exactly the same details, it is £110 cheaper, when you phone and query miraculously they can do it cheaper. It must be some sort of loyalty reward:D

Did the sex discrimination thing get resolved or do women get cheaper insurance still.

  • 2 weeks later...

still having no joy with isurance...NFU last hope.

and Griff I hear what you say, its about risk today, but that is not what it was introduced for and not what it is really about. Insurance is about spreading the cost of covering accidents.

if you start making people pay more for their insurance then they wont pay, if you then follow that through some people will have to pay more for those that dont pay...

'oh well blow me, thats what is happening today and we wonder why' .(sarcasm) ..well its because some people think that people should pay for their insurance based on risk...wrong...thats why we have people with no insurance...its too expensive because we are making people pay disproportionately based upon risk...it will never work...

society is about sharing the costs and building for the better...its not about blame and risk...the real cost of insurance is the neck injury claims and fraud, and paying out for uninsured drivers......not the number of accidents the kids have...

Going back to the reason for this thread a moment - the problem was getting insurance cover for an under 25 year old on a MV policy. The really annoying aspect is that, as Paul states, his son had already been covered for 2 years!

I wonder if this might be a case of the broker realising that they accepted a proposal which inlcuded, and had been providing cover for, an under 25 year old - which might perhaps have been outside the provision of the policy?

I have accepted the no under 25 year old driver condition for some years now - it seems to be universal amongst MV policy brokers, and certainly hasn't been an issue for me (OK if I had a 22 years old son I'd probably be frustrated too!), and I've assumed that the age restriction is one measure which allows the insurance underwriters to keep the MV premiums so low.

And come on folks, MV insurance is good value, isn't it?

yes it is but it is wrong, it is prejudical against our younger members...and we all know you cannot be prejudiced these days...

i have three sons, they want to drive my cars and trucks, brad did his HGV c+e with onyl 2 advisories, I got 5. I want to put my second son through the tests as it makes people better driverss learning how to drive a big vehicle, my opinion..and it will therefore make him safer on the road...but if he cannot get insured it makes a mockery of the law...

Have you tried Hagerty- 0844 824 1134 some of my mates in the AVO owners clubs used them, as as i recently posted I have just moved to them. Try that number, i spoke to Charlie who was most helpful.

All the best

Gerry

will give them a try but the nfu look as if they are going to come good...and then I am sorted...been with the nfu for over 7 years with my main vehicles, shame i am going to have to leave footman james...I have my classic bikes my cars and my MV stuff with them, a lot of vehicles and have never made a claim in ll the years i have been with them, and I havebeen with them for a long time....

They say its their underwritter that has changed his mind on family members under 25..utter madness...
