Insurance again, how crazy this country is becoming

My Spartan is insured with Glynwood.

http://www.glynwood.co.uk/specialist.php

(No connection other than a (very) satisfied customer.)

One of 2 companies I found that would insure me (I'm 24)

The best bit is that fully comp, it costs 1/2 as much as my Ford Focus, work that one out!...

A lot of companies said 25+, surprisingly a lot also said 30+, when you can drive a tracked vehicle from 21.

My Matador is with the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society scheme through NBJ, that costs 1/4 as much as the Spartan's insurance (1/8 of the cost of my car insurance...:cool2:) although till I am 25 next year that is only 3rd party, but includes UK & EU breakdown...

I know this thread is primarily about criticising Insurance Companies......and I know I've done my share of that :cool2:

.....but I feel I should say this in praise of an Insurance Company.

I recently had some damage done to the canopy back fitted to my Mitsubishi L200........briefly , the damage couldn't be repaired for various reasons, but meanwhile I'd found a few of them on Ebay and quickly realised I could replace the whole canopy for less than the work was going to cost even if the parts had been available.

..So :-\

More in hope than expectation I rang my Insurers and endeavored to explain that , although they had agreed to repair my truck (which they readily agreed they were ready to do )......it was proving hard to do.....("yes it is" they said) .

so .........would they be happy giving me a budget to work within???........

and then I would find a complete replacement and fit it myself instead of them trying to repair the old one??

I also explained I could possibly do it for less than they were getting ready to pay out for a repair so , it could actually save them some money..........

As I said.... I rang more in expectation than any hope of common sense prevailing but after only a minute or so of actually speaking to a 'real' person he simply said

"Yep that sounds fine...here's a reference number....go ahead and do it within this budget and just send me the invoices and your costs for fuel etc and we'll pay for it"

He was as good as his word too.

No messing about , no haggling... and like I said ....a 'real' living breathing (and understandable if you know what I mean) person to speak to with a name and his own extension number.

So !!!........they're not all bad ! .The company by the way is called Markerstudy Insurance.

Being 19 I find it very difficult as I've been into classic vehicles for so long, I could not wait for the day I could get my driving licence. I've been trying to find someone who will cover me on my Series III Landy but it's almost impossible. Noted down a few of the insurers listed here so I'll give them a call when spring comes round. Daily I drive a 24 year old Micra I got for nothing, never had an accident and don't go blasting round like my hair is on fire. It annoys me seeing how little an idea mates have behind the wheel, they really don't have any mechanical empathy whatsoever for starters. Strangely my 30 year old 2.8 Supra is actually cheaper to insure than the Micra for a year, obviously due to no old Supras being crashed by young drivers. Just shows it doesn't make sense at all.

Good luck with trying to insure a Landrover for yourself mate....I gave up trying to insure one of mine for either my son or stepson when both were at similar ages.....:undecided:....

By the way...

.perhaps somebody that maybe works or has worked in the insurance business can shed some light on this question??.....

...I've never managed to work out if it is actually the number of a certain type of vehicle being crashed that determines the cost of insuring them???....

...... or whether , as in the case of a Landrover :D ,

how much damage it will generally do to an 'ordinary ' car when involved in an accident ????????

It certainly makes you wonder. A shame but we'll see what I can do. I've owned it since I was 12 so after 7 years as you can imagine I'm getting a bit desperate to have her on the road. I know you can do a lot of damage with a big girder-like bumper across the front but at the same time I'm never going to be doing more than 45-50mph. I also heard something along the lines of Landy insurance had shot up because they were easy to steal and easy to trade stolen parts on with no trace. Not sure how much truth there is in that but it would seem a valid point. Not sure why anyone would want to steal a 40 year old Land Rover in the first place but there you go!

As it will be more of a weekend toy I'll see what the quote comes to with mum and dad on the policy as they're going to be using it equally as much as me on a very limited mileage. Tried the NFU but unfortunately you have to be over 21, or if going for a classic policy, over 25. It is a pain and I can well understand Paul's frustration having a fleet of vehicles his sons can't enjoy out on the road. Sometimes even from a practical aspect, for example taking vehicles to and from shows can be a hurdle. It would be so easy for dad to drive the Spartan and me drive the Ferret to any nearby events, but sadly that can't happen either for a few more years!
