ferrettkitt Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-23035872 Wow does that now mean that every Chieftain owner is sitting on forty odd thousand pounds of vehicle? Quote
Locolines Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 Not fair ! I was just short of the winning amount. £40,999 to be exact:embarrassed: Quote
ruxy Posted June 25, 2013 Author Posted June 25, 2013 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-22915771 So - if it is still to be deactivated , that means it was a Direct MOD release sale , I wonder where it has been these last few years ? Quote
Mk3iain Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 " I wonder where it has been these last few years ?"In a shed with at least 50 others, if I remember correctly !Iain Quote

andym Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 So - if it is still to be deactivated , that means it was a Direct MOD release sale , I wonder where it has been these last few years ? The Withams tender description said "reserve stock" if I remember correctly. Andy Quote
gritineye Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 Don't you just love those useful comparisons used by journos and presenters.. The tank weighs the same as 11 elephants and can fit up to four crew members which is great because I've been trying to work out how many all week....:nut: Quote
arnie Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 There will be now 11 in stock when this one goes.:wow:?I was led to believe!!!!!. Arnie Quote
Adrian T Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 Not fair ! I was just short of the winning amount. £40,999 to be exact:embarrassed: How much would you pay for a Mk5 Chieftain with 11,000 miles on the clock:kiss: Quote
andym Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 One might argue that £41k for a decent unmangled Chieftain is better value than £10k for a Bulldog ambulance with no engine or gearbox! :-) Andy Quote
Bob Grundy Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 All I can say is do NOT believe a newspaper report....... Quote
Mk3iain Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Yes I heard that too, though not sure about the 50 - more on the way I think...! I seen them a few years ago and had a go at counting them, I am sure it was nearer 60 but it was a guestimate. Iain Quote
sirhc Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 You can count them if you look on google maps satellite view. Definitely not 60! Quote
Mk3iain Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Well, it was about 10 years ago and they were all tucked up in shed with lots of other stuff.Might still be some in shed !Iain Quote
lizzie Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Why is the tender chieftain so great, there is one on milweb that's better .And if that's not your cup of tea I have a mark 11 with all the bells and whistles ,and it changes through all its gears. Quote
paulob1 Posted June 28, 2013 Posted June 28, 2013 I want a chieftain but no cash for it right now...maybe next year... Quote

antar Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-22915771 So - if it is still to be deactivated , that means it was a Direct MOD release sale , I wonder where it has been these last few years ? The other possibility is that it was originally purchased by someone who had a Firearms Certificate and has held on to it for a while.... I was just searching through an old file and found an old MOD Tender catalogue from 17 December 1992, l noticed that there were 89 Chieftain MBT MK 10's listed. 07FA14 was listed as lot number 193 which just happens to be the same number as the one recently advertised in the Withams tender ! My suggestion is that it was purchased by Withams in the MOD Tender in 1992, and has been stored with the other 17 they purchased at the time inside the big hangar until it was refurbished around 3 years ago and the Chieftains moved outside under heavy canvas sheets. For interest I have attached the relevant pages of the MOD Tender and the recent Withams catalogue. Quote
ruxy Posted July 7, 2013 Author Posted July 7, 2013 Well done ! That is the sort of reply I like to read , answered with the evidence to back up. Quote
paulob1 Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 at the withams site google earth shows a few of them, not 60 but a few, I guess they are going to release them one by one to increase the sale value...no matter what we say about Withams they have the right idea about squeezing every last penny out of each sale...not good for us collectors with small pockets...but hopefully a good deal of it goes to the army. Still think a single seller is anti-competitive and un-british... Quote

Still think a single seller is anti-competitive and un-british... From evidence early in this thread this particular tank went up for tender at Ludgershall 21 years ago, so how can any profits go back to the army, it is the present owner who gets that. This is business, they have had to store it all those years and keeping back a good one to put out on the market years on is what it is all about. Quote
ruxy Posted July 8, 2013 Author Posted July 8, 2013 Abt. 18 years ago , McGregor's first asking price for a good runner T-34/85 delivered was £10,000 , I suppose the UK was awash with tanks. Quote
