Has anyone ever fitted a non-standard (modern) engine to their military vehicle?

I have some fiends in low places, aren't they the best?

 

Anyhow, I have been meaning to make contact with the King Abdullah Design Bureau in Jordan and see if they will relase info on how they have repowered their Ferrets. If I do get the info I will be sure to get it in a form that is allowable for public consumption so we can all benefit.

Perhaps Jordanian Ferrets were re-engined using a variant of the power train designed for Ferret 80

using a Perkins T6/3544 - the dieselisation kit for the cvrt, surely some-one used the design effort for the Ferret 80. :???

That's another question answered, it sounds like a comparatively utility conversion, does it retain the original transmission system?

 

After posting about the Iveco EN83 engine being used in the Ferret on Jordanian dieselisation programme, something made me look up the KADDB organistion in Jordan doing this work. The inital programme was in 2006, but the KADDB website shows Ferret 2 dieselisation programme as using a Chinese turbo diesel interfacing with original gearbox, the way it is worded appears that this project is current. I am wondering if this is due to the Iveco not being suitable ........ or is it one and the same engine but made in China?

From what I understand, the upgrade package provided by Alvis in late Eighties, for the Ferret, utilised a 4 cylinder Perkins Phaser 110MT (similar to that used in RB44) coupled to a Chrysler auto gearbox. as for the Jordanian dieselisation of Ferret, they used a 4 cylinder Iveco engine.

 

If you want to see the Jordanian upgrade, you might consider asking The Light Dragoons ( http://www.lightdragoons.org.uk/regiment_today/index.php ) very nicely if they might allow you to look at their "gate guardian" (not really a gate guardian, cos it's inside Robertson Barracks, Swanton Morley) presented by their Colonel in Chief, King Abdullah.

 

I cannot promise you the LD Ferret features the Jordanian upgrade - I didn't know they'd done one until five minutes ago. And AFAIK my 360 degree photo set of said Ferret turned up nothing that screamed, "I don't remember that on a Mark 2 Ferret" at me. But King Abdullah has only been Colonel in Chief since HRH The Princess Diana died, so I figure the Ferret he presented must have been quite late.

Hi all,

i have a mk2 stolly, that initially i thought about re-engine it, but this one is in original good complete condition, so i am on the hunt for another to do it to.

 

in the first issue of classic military vehicle mag, the feature about an engine change in a stolly, (they were just changinr one b80 for another) they have a photo at the end saying this it what it should look like, but actually its a cummins! can anyone tell what model? or who does this stolly belong to?

 

"stal 108" your stolly with cummins, how has it affected it? performance wise? does it rev enough? is there enough power? obviously better on fuel! and whats the sound of it like?

my plan is to get another and totally modify it, so im not bothered about originality as i have the other for that.

 

i like the cummins motor, even though i work at volvo, but the volvo motor's only rev to 2- 2500, so i've ruled them out, also they seem to be a wee bit more expensive!

just another thought for this thread!

 

if you have another engine fitted in your mv, can you post pictures of the conversion!

i am in the middle of fitting a 200 tdi into a normally aspirated land rover 110,

i know there both landy engines but it shows that you can improve by fitting modern engines!

 

i will post some pictures, but the project has slowed a little, as the bulkhead is rotten so the owner wants to replace it

I found the cummins to be far better, torque not talk.

Start off rev up to 1800/2200rpm change up still with lots of grunt 555ftlb at 1600rpm ish will rev to 3250 if needed. yes it is not as fast top speed you can fit 1600/20 or saracen transfer gearing. And as most stolly miss splutter you never seen to get max power ot torque whan you want it points???? er! electronic better but stil not as smoth running as a diesel.

 

I HAVE AN IDEA

Fit a fwd diesel (escort or similar)engine above the gearbox turn the bevel boxes for the dowety drives to face the gearbox of the engine you have fitted ,make some props up to connect the engine and box to the bevel box.. you have a diesel powerd dowety use the gears to get the right drive speed.. simples!

cheaper to run in the water, as you will only run it in the water you could not bether with a rad use the water your in pumped rounf the engine.

This was supposed to be the one that had been 'gifted'. Or I was told that this was the one. I thought that the exhaust exited out the other side?

A pal has this ferret the Gearbox was U/S so i sugested repower it and auto,, I said landrover 300tdi,, SAME 125HP 4250 rpm so a little more and lets not even think of the extra Torque they have,, It will be at Evasham in June it all up and running now see pic

A reasonably successful factory conversion was the Simca SUMB upgrade from Ford V8 to turbo diesel by Renault - around 1000 of the then 30 year old vehicles were refurbished with the same turbo diesel engine as the TRM2000 (along with new electrics and brakes) in the early 1990s. The motive in that case was fuel economy and spares rationalisation, although there was a small increase in power (110 to 130HP from memory). I am also aware of some unofficial conversions - at least one UK owner used a Ford transit diesel engine and gearbox coupled to the existing transfer box.

For anyone thinking a Cummins B Series might be a bit tame and slow (best I've heard of automotive-wise is 230hp @ around 2500rpm and for marine application 300hp - adequate cooling), the folk at Sin City Motors (Dave channel this evening on TV) have just installed a tuned B Series into a rat rod. Now before you all fall around laughing:

 

if I heard correctly this one gives out 800hp at 6,000rpm, and will boost to 1,000hp with nitrous injection.

 

WTF?

An update on my 2013 post - the SUMB I am working on now was fitted by the previous owner with a Volvo D24T engine (actually made by VW) ex 760 estate and its auto box as a unit. The interfaces to the original vehicle are just the drive shaft to the transfer box and the belt drive to the compressor for the air-over-oil brakes. This engine is actually a close relative of the Pinzgauer TD engine and works quite well - it's a little underpowered (90hp) and a little lower geared compared with a healthy Ford Flathead V8 (110hp) but much better than a poorly V8 that I have experienced previously.

 

The main issue which the previous owner didn't completely address as he used it off road was that the D24T starter and alternator are 12V but the SUMB was 24V so I need to convert to 12V lights and fit a 12 to 24V converter for the instruments and wiper motor before driving it home - see my restoration topic for updates !

...If you're serious about a Ferret that's just about ready for the scrapyard ?

I happen to know where one is .......as I recall it's got the engine still in place ...and it's 4 wheels....and the turret .....and ...well ..that's about it really :) well OK ..there's a bit more of it than that but it's as rough as the proverbial badgers behind ... :)

Well here we go then I have been up to something over the past 18 months.. Can you spot the differences in the pics from an ordinary GMC.

 

They are subtle you might need to know your GMC's. :whistle:

Headlights?

 

Whats wrong with the headlights no change there!! no very cold....

Oops just noticed this pic was taken before I refitted the head lights so you are right but still wrong. down lower say under the fuel tank.

 

2nd photo seems to show a hump in canvas at rear.

 

Yes but no, thats been there for years and years, wrong end......

 

not clear in photos but can't see exhaust where I would expect to on a 352.

 

Ah getting warmer, one obvious thing in the right hand side pic, and one very subtle thing in the left hand side pic...

 

May still not give the game away though :cool2:
