Topdog
SLOW DOWN, when there is 15 tons of 432 coming down a narrow country lane towards them. Tw@ts........ and breeeath deeply. Gave Mark Heliops a hand with the WLF today and although we didnt unbolt a great deal, we got it in position for the main assault on the engine, which involved towing it and backing into place with the 432. Well, seeing as it was out and running Mark decided to go for a spin 'round the block'. Hmmm, dammed big block mate! Loads of the lanes round Paddock Wood 'aint too wide when you stick an APC on it and these people have no idea how much space we need. Brilliant afternoon Mark, do it again sometime. Tony B
its like buses, I call it the blindness gene. 'If I don't see that F******* great thing , that can't POSSIBLY be in MY way! It won't be there'
Markheliops
Thanks for the hand David. Yes, some people behind a steering wheel have no idea. Even when I slow down approaching corners - out of pure consideration for other road users - round they come - and they see me - do they slow down? Do they hell. You would think seeing 15 ton of 432 coming towards them they would either move over or stop or even slow down. Nope. Totally unaware. It's almost as though they are thinking - "I don't care how big you are, I'm not moving for you." Anyway, didn't hit anything so I class that as I successful road run. antarmike
It's a game of dare out there now! I only had two people pass me by going to the right of keep left bollards in the middle of the road on my last trip out with the Antar. They have no idea how to drive sensibly... Topdog
I think there should be a new motoring offence of 'Driving like a tw@t'. It is uncontestable and requires no evidence. 3 points and £60 fixed penalty; m'lud he was driving like a tw@t. Ah yes, I know exactly what you mean - guilty. woa2
I know the people you mean. Those drivers who cut-in on me on a Motorway who think the stopping distance at 50mph for a car equiped with cable brakes is 20 feet.
Bazz
Seen many people trying to pass AFV's in convoy and having to pull into the safety gaps thus causing the vehs to brake. On one ex in Germany escorting a convoy of 432s a beetle was leap frogging between them swerved in between 2 slamming on his brakes to avoid rearending the 432 in front, but forgetting the 432 behind, this one ran over the top of the beetle as it was unable to stop in time. N.O.S.
On the other hand........... Just imagine a dear old couple out for their peaceful weekend drive down quiet country lanes, when suddenly 15 tons of what they had mistakenly taken for hedgerow leaps acoss the blacktop straight at them :shake:
ArtistsRifles
Now that would be one for the "You've been Framed" collection. Need to make sure the cam-corder is securely fixed to the front of the APC!! Although the big orange whirly thingy should have given the game away!!!!
abn deuce
That is provided you have it switched on and that it has not been knocked off by some low branch while getting into the hedge in the first place ......really though people often are not seeing whats in the road ahead....they may be looking for a oncoming car or the rear of a car only they zone out on the rest .....Over here people have sometimes driven straight into the side of moving trains at grade level crossings claiming they never saw the train!!! hence the only safe train/ car crossing is where the two never meet as in a bridge or tunnel , bells , lights and crossing barriers dont work . Tony B
There is a known condition called 'Middle feild myopia' The brain, assuming some people on the road actually have them, focuses on a distance of about 50 feet. Fine except when you need 60 feet to stop. The answer is to kep the eyes changing focus by looking about. Many people seem to look at a bend in the road, not around it. Had this the other day, resulted in the other idiot in the hedge.
N.O.S.
You're right there, Tony. As with going down a snowy hill with planks fastened to your feet, if you keep looking at the tree, you will end up hitting it. Perhaps that's the thing - people find the mvs so fascinating they can't take their eyes off them :-D

Tony B
You steer a horse by looking where you want to go, your weight guides the horse. Same with vehicles, they go where you look.
LeeEnfield
Its the left turn, that nearly always causes folk to require clean underware. :cool2:,.......sinario, 432 turning left, car(s) behind thinking , GREAT, able to wizz past now, only to be suddenly confronted by rear of said apc appearing across their bonnets due to skid steering. (thats even with a sign hanging from backside saying rear will swing out on turning.) Ho Hum........
AndyFowler
This behaviour could be catching even to us military types as whilst following my mate Dave in his 969 Diamond T along Seven Mile Lane on the way to last years War and Peace a plonker towing a Jeep on an A frame over took my Pig and tried to pass Dave whilst on the blind brow of a hill and had to swerve in behind him as amazingly a car " appeared out of no where " ! Luckily for his Jeep I like to keep the old Pigs brakes in tip top condition ! Then of course no lesson learnt he over took Dave and disappeared into the distance ! :argh: Patience is definitely a virtue for most things in life I think ! ArtistsRifles
Must be a catch-22 senario though Lee. If someone has a finite budget for fuel for their vehicle then, at some point, the rapidly escalating fuel prices are going to mean the range of movement for that vehicle is curtailed. As we can't get discounted fuel for the MV's (now theres's an idea for Jack to pursue - a discount on fuel from a supplier... ) then the range will get progressively snmaller until either the vehicle can't move or can only make localised shows. It will be interesting to compare vehicle numbers, especially the heavies, at W&P over the next couple of years.... To illustrate - the firm picking up my OT can no longer give a fixed price more than 3 days ahead of the job due to the way fuel prices are changing. A couple of months ago they could give a firm price for the Plains trip weeks, if not months, in advance!!

LarryH57
Bazz, WaS the incident you mention in Germany in the 1980's? I remember a similar type of accident when on exercise one autumn during the annual BAOR exercises.
