Ex WD tool case

I have been asked to identify and price an ex WD tool carry case - see here for photos https://www.facebook.com/Gumtree4x4Ltd/photos/pcb.5133408663375921/5134341749949279

It measures 13" x 5.25" x 8" (length x width x height) and is in good order. Neighbour is selling it for Age UK and wants to ask a sensible but fair price. All help greatly appreciated. 

Just surprised myself and managed to load a photo. Do have others if wanted.

You are certain that it is WD? Are there any numbers or letters on it?

Possibly might be Bag, tool, satchel No.2  that was leather about the same size

This was the standard tool box on most war-time and immeadiate post-war softskin vehicles.  In the lighter leather likely to be 1950's that war-time.

Here's a photo from Morris C8s post of Dunkirk photos, showing a British tool box in new owner ship, on the back of a German BMW R12,  I think it could be WW2 issue, they are sometimes dated on the inside of the lid.

Usually the lighter ones are postwar, but there were many makes and variations, mine is dated 1940, and paid 35 quid for it in 2019.

It is stamped WD as shown and we can't find a date on it. It is a pale leather so most likely a 1950's one. Ebay has one for £90 but it isn't selling.......... Genuine offers welcome. I will pass them on.

Or what the contens was of this chest?? lable has mostly gone unfortunatly, it's very big! can't find the pictures of the complete box now, but will add later.

LV6-MT1 covers tool roll, chests etc but just the container. Sets of tools that go inside the containers are in LV6-MT2 then those themselves also appear in Section F1 Hand tools.

All I can find for 6704 is in LV6-MT1 below. Going to LV6-MT1 1944 the only tool roll listed is for Operators Tyre Repair Plant (Basic). The are copious lists of contents for tool chests, which I will respond to in a moment.

No idea John, but perhaps on here might be a fertile selling ground. Maybe advertise it for a week asking potential vendors to PM with their best offer before a certain date. Then if no takers with a sensible offers then ebay, but at least on here it will be appreciated by those who know exactly what it is rather being used a make-up bag or a picnic basket.

Hello Lex. I had hoped to get you started by offering you the callipers from the top of the list, but so far have been unable to put my hand on them (too many hidey- holes). I will probably have other bits and bobs, but not always with the broad arrow, such as a 1/2” belly brace. 
 

I live in Maidstone, Kent, so not sure how best to get stuff to you, but if you seriously want to fill the box I’m sure there’s a way.

Ok, that sounds very nice! but no hurry, I have a pair, no idea what size, but these mention spring loaded, not seen that before?? Anyway, have an address in Poole, and will pay you for postage, first try to locate them, and we"ll go from there!

Thanks for the motorcycle roll scan, Clive...it's useful confirmation. Do you know what the 'MC' refers to on both the tool case and the roll references ? I've seen it too on leather straps...and it doesn't seem to indicate 'Motor-Cycle'.

I would like to start a bid at £10 as I will be in the area of Guntree next week. It is almost certainly worth more though.

I don't know but I have seen MC prefixing design specifications from Directorate of Fighting Vehicles Inspection.

This is what replaced tool kit 43964.

Not only are there some amendments but the kit has moved from VAOS Section LV6-MT2 to VAOS Section F Part 2. (Although a few items from LV6-MT2 remain).

Once included as a Mechanical Transport Miscellaneous Item it is now with Hand Tools. Here all 67 types of tool kits were given consecutive catalogue items and arranged as a series of pamphlets.

Starting Pamphlet No.1 covering catalogue item FA 20201

Ending Pamphlet No.67 covering catalogue item FA 20267

It seems logical to bring together all tool kits into one sub-section covering a wide range of skills & crafts from MT repair, to farriers and gasfitters.
