0 Enigma
Ive remembered one from a course I was on some years ago. Which was about Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) it was during a film of a derailed Gas tank train in the USA where one tank reptured and caught fire superheating the next one creating a BLEVE or boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion. Which caused the whole railcar and tank it was carrying to set off like a Saturn 5 rocket. Unfortunately the blast took out most of the fire crew who were tackling it. I think the expansion rate of compressed LPG is something like 1Kilo of liquid = 25 cubic metres of gas. be careful with your conversions and cooking stoves Centurion Yup, I got burned when the fillercap came of a petrolcooker. Itwas turned off but the gas ignited from a 2nd cooker. I got hit only a split second by the heat/flame....3rd degree burns. Not too bad though, in a week the wound was closed, it din't get infected. 0 Tony B
Mind you with America and England you can enough fun with just the language. Just walk into a room full of Yanks and say something like 'I'm dying for a fag, :dunno:. I was travelling home on the tube one evening when a bunch of young Americans got on : Conversation 'What was the name that guy called you?', Hey it was good word, we'll have it all round the west Coast when we get back, what was it again (Very wistfully) W*****. When I managed to get off the floor and stop laughing I did delicately explain it was a word not used in polite conversation.
0 abn deuce
yes the LOTUS was what I was looking for along those lines ...any thing on Land Rover or Rover ? On the other remark We are people divided by a common language . When it comes to slang on either side of the pond ..It's easy to get into hot water when words may have a completely different meaning in another country that's for sure. 0 AlienFTM
According to Peter Elstob in his "Hitler's Last Offensive", an account of the Ardennes Offensive, there were three conditional states: SNAFU (already covered) FUMTU (Fouled Up More Than Usual) TARFU (Things Are Really Fouled Up) Obviously since then, somebody invented FUBAR. Here's some more: NFI: No Flipping Interest. NAAFI: No Ambition And Flip-all Interest. I believe in this thread (I may be wrong - ask if you haven't) you have seen SWALK, CHIP, FISH and NORWICH. My favourite is SWSTKTBTT. Okay it doesn't make a good acronym, but it is certainly descriptive: Sealed With Spit To Keep The Blooming Thing Together.
