Fordson WOT6

Bit by bit I’m chipping away at the list of jobs.

Drivers wing now filled, sanded and primed.

All the anti slip plates for the wings are cut and drilled ready for paint.

A bit more progress with the lighting, I found a pair of Butler side lights on eBay to replace my rusty ones.

I am going to replace the headlights as both bowls are rusted through in places, there a standard 5 3/4 inch Butler light so sourcing replacements shouldn’t be a problem or I am thinking of upgrading to new lights which are fitted to tractors and look almost identical but can be fitted with modern bulbs, any thoughts??

Standard WW2 Army headlights are either Butler or Lucas manufacture. They look identical from a distance but most of the component parts do not interchange. They have a part number starting with either B or L stamped on the top of the body as a hint but beware of mixed parts that don't fit together properly. It may well be that one is easier to retrofit with modern reflectors/ glass than the other.

The original buckets/bowls are not in good condition and there not a matching pair, both lens are butler but the reflectors are also in poor condition.

I will most probably look for a matching pair of headlamp bowls and then look at the option of retrofitting modern reflectors.

Evening everyone 

Well….a mile stone has been reached, after 22 months I’ve finally refitted the first items removed when this project started in April 2020 😁🎉🍻

 

Freshly painted front wings and accessories.

I finally fitted the wings last weekend but it was dark when I finished so I didn’t have the opportunity to take pictures.

The wings and step have been weight tested!! They are now substantially stronger which to be honest wasn’t difficult as the passenger wing was held on with a bungee strap and cable tie 🤨

Unfortunately the weather has been slightly damp and blustery so I wasn’t able to uncover the truck and get a good picture, hopefully next weekend. 
 

I think next job will be checking the brakes and driveline, I feel like I need a little break from bodywork 😬

An't that the truth !!

Excellent job on the wings they have come up really well. 

 I fully appreciate the amount of effort that's needed to save something like this  and turn out a good result.

Thanks for the link Martin, I see the manuals are now sold but I’ve been fortunate enough to collect all of those manuals over the last 18 months.

Not much progress recently, work has been ridiculously busy and the weather has been slightly temperamental 🤨   
 

I decided to covert the headlamp bowls to accept halogen lights as a safety feature, fairly easy conversion and relatively inexpensive. 
 

Picked up a good pair of Butler headlamp bowls on eBay.

New pair of halogen lamps

First job was to carefully cut off the locating tabs.

Next up was altering the brackets to allow space for the new lamps. 
Grind down the rivet head for clearance .

Take the securing bracket out and weld on the outside.

It is Fordson WOT8 not 6. And as the number on the doors does not start with "L" and there is no unit sign, it is probably in Dutch service.

Evening everyone 

Problem solving time 🤔

So…the problem!! …. My throttle pedal is sitting to high and has too much travel, as you know originally the wot6 would have had a flat head V8 and the throttle would have been made up of various rods and links, a previous owner fitted the current Ford 4d Diesel engine and the throttle was a bit of a hash that didn’t really work and wasn’t connected to the hand throttle, a while back I spent quite some time fitting a throttle cable and making various brackets and links to connect the hand throttle so everything worked as it should but I was never happy with the amount of travel or how steep the pedal was, I am assuming the pedal is original but it’s location on the floor was a guess as the old floor had rotted away.

 

There’s pictures below of the setup and I am sure there’s a simple fix for the angle of the dangle but I am stumped, any advice would be welcome.

And yes before anyone says anything the floors and inside were all freshly painted last year!! It hasn’t taken long to get messy.

It sounds as though the crank ratios are too low.

I would try moving the end of the throttle cable to the hole you have the return spring in and put the return spring at the top and see if that helps the pedal ratio.

If that works make a proper job of it rather than the bodge I suggested to try it.

I will admit I'm mystified by the second and third photos as to how the double hinged shaft moves the throttle cable in and out.

It’s complicated!!    The pedal and double hinged shaft are part of the original rod and lever set up that is combined with the hand throttle, the new throttle cable is connected to this which is attached to the chassis, there’s a lot of moving parts 🤨
 

Photo 6 when the cable is attached to the manifold is a bodge, I’ve cut and welded it 5 times to try different positions, as you said it’s down to crank ratios but I am struggling to work it out.
