Identification of RAF Octagon Star Shape

Will16

Question

Hi guys,

I've been looking through old pictures of my Landy. When we first got it it was ex-RAF and still had the outline on the rear panels where the old sticker used to be. I have never come across this shape before. It looks to be a Octagonal Star shape. I beleive it was at Brize Norton around 1991-1994 as it was first registered in 1991. Anyone got any info on the shape or even the Landy?

Many Thanks,

Will

Theres a good chance that it may have been in Army service prior to RAF service. The RAF have their own fire service rather than the defence fire service. We don't tend to stick badges on our vehicles in the RAF unless its a specialist vehicle like EOD, Police or Ambulance etc. The vehicles are passed around quite a bit so the badges would be redundent on a regular basis. I do know my old Boss on XI Sqn used to have magnetic XI Sqn badges fo his MT Corsa. Also, nearly all Sqn badges (Be it RAF reg, Sqn, Stn etc.) are based on a crest with the crown on top and are quite distinctive.

Do you have an RAF reg number to check Will?

The Defence Fire and Rescue badge applied to vehicles almost always bears the crown, and as far as i'm aware their vehicles are painted red. The RAF Fire and Rescue service has a different badge and also uses red vehicles.

The only colour on it is Blue from the factory, and the red oxide primer. Tomorrow I may be able to find a patch to rub down and have a look. The only reg number is civvie I think. It is H902 UWY I beleive off the top of my head. There was definatley a sticker there though. I'll have a look at the chassis plate as well. After the Landy was used in the RAF it went to Serco and Chubb. Thanks for the help so far guys,

Looks like the outline of the Defence Fire Services badge to me.

Thanks guys, it does look like it could of been Defence Fire Service. But why would it been TAF blue grey with grey sills, roof and wheels? Could it of been one of the first vehicles as the Defence Fire Service was formed in 1991?

You mentioned earlier that after its RAF service it was used by Serco and Chubb. Is it not a possibility that one of those companies painted it blue and grey? Then a private owner might have put it back to green. he crest on the side could also be something done since it left service. The Defence Fire Service emblem has a crown at the top as already pointed out so this must be something else. Another posibility is that the roof is from another vehicle and was fitted since its RAF service.

The RAF made the move from blue grey to green during the 70s if i've remembered right, i'd need to check for the exact date.

It's not impossible that one of the civvy users had it stripped back and painted.

If you get a chassis number its usually possible to get a service registration number - theres a couple of people around who can help you - and from there you can get a rough history of the vehicle.
