Cracked Tyres !

Johnh

Question

I guess you will say 'that old chestnut again' however I can find threads on tyre protection etc but after my long road run from Andover the other weekend and finally got down to a full check of the REO we now have found cracks on the side walls on three of the tyres, The cracks don't go all round the rim, there are no blisters or gouges and one shows cracks in the tread valleys.

so can anyone point me in the direction of a tyre supplier up north ? also is it best to jack and chock until I can get replacements ? bang goes the idea of going to the local shows:cry:

99 percent of bartread ferret tires have sidewall cracks however these side walls are very thick best to get piece of paper and see how deep cracks are and make decision if tire with a certain amount of cracking is serviceable or not

Thanks for your quick reply ! The guy from ATS joked that if I had driven the 200 miles up to Doncaster on them without any dramas, why was I worried about going 9 miles down the road to Braithwell ??? apparently they have been stood for a long time, fronts are in good order its just the drivers side rears (L/H/D) i wonder if it has been 'kerbed' a few times ?

Somewhere on the side wall of you're tyres you should find a date code for when the tyres were made. If more than twenty years old cough up some pennies and go and buy a new set.

In regards to Ferrets I changed my tyres because they had cracks in them. I thought that if my missus was in the turret and we had a blow out, flip over and a death because I didn't change the tyres I wouldn't be able to forgive myself. Not worth it, not bothered if they don't look correct for the perfectionists or the keep them original lobby its my missus in the turret.

My two pence worth

talking of cracked tyres, i am desperate for 3 more 900 x 16 british track grip tyres for my Morris CS8, I have some good ones but I also have 3 quite worn, these are Dunlop Runflats.

My question is does anyone still re cut tyre treads like they used to ?, those old tyres are so thick that surely they could be re cut ? anyone still do it ?

Jules

11.00 x 20s? Try Marltrax at Great Yarmouth maybe? I know it's not up north (unless you're from Kent) but they used to keep them.

An M35A2 tyres will be 9.00x20. 11.00x20 can be used on the same rims, but 900's are the correct size.

These tyres always crack. I can't remember the last time I saw a Reo without cracked tyres. However, they will be illegal to use on the road and it's 3 points and a £60 fine for EACH tyre.

can some one post road traffic law etc where it talks about side-wall cracking plse just had look at mot testers handbook no mention of sidewall cracks ,so for instance ferret side wall having seen one of wheel whilst puncture repaired i would guess sidewalls are 2 inches thick so u could have a age related sidewall crack 50 thou deep that would only be 2.5 percent of side wall thickness ,( a no no would be a crack thru which you could see cord.

I don't know how to put this my better halfs car came back from its MOT with an advisory notice that the rear tyre was due for replacement due to perishing.

In regards to tyres its not just the condition of the side walls its the very structure of the tyre that degrades. It doesn't matter how thick the tyre wall is rubber is constantly degrading / perishing. Sticking a bag over the tyre won't stop the rot.

Its up to the driver of the vehicle if he chooses to replace them or not but as in the case of the Ferret its usually the commander in the turret that bites the bullet in a roll over. The driver usually survives

exactly correct tony, andy the reason it was a advisory is no mention of tire perishing in mot testers handbook as a fail item, long as no cord showing .this thread started about cracked sidewalls ,not : should old tires be replaced thats a whole different kettle of fish:!

contentious threads are some of the best!!:-D

Just don't want to be branded a time waster, I know there is nothing worse than a newbie asking time repeated questions ...

however, i was wearing my usual rose-tinted glasses as i purchased my dream machine, the same as yesterday when I un-wrapped the so called new tyres for the Whirlwind...err no inner tubes guv ?

Anyway , one thing is to get the tyres, next challenge will be who to fit them !!!:nut:

I've had to replace all 5 of my Defender tyres due to the MOT tester advising that they required changing due to age related cracks in the carcas.

This might prove useful.
