Lauren Child
Field Maypole. Created from local materials and stones. Used when a regular maypole would give your position away. Raised edge provides cover for the Morris Dancers during use. Edited February 1, 2014 by Lauren Child

Lauren Child
Is it anything to do with temperature? Possibly condensing water on colder rocks, running down into the channel?

fv1609
ROCKS used construction could it be a water obstacle It looks as if it could well be that sort of thing Wally. But it has a rather different purpose.
andym
Looks like a section through something. A road or drainage channel, perhaps? Andy
fv1609
Is it anything to do with temperature? Possibly condensing water on colder rocks, running down into the channel? I expect its probably more likely to get warm than cold Lauren, so its not a cooling water feature.

Andy Yes it is a sectional view Andy & it does look like a drainage channel or a peculiar sort of road but its not that

wally dugan
IT looks like its all man made the soil dug out to form a earth retaining bank if it is filled with water why the need to have two channels ?
fv1609
Coal, stacked, for the thorough saturation of... :-D Alec No coal Alec we've established that these are all stones. If I'm not giving too much away, the instructions indicate that this "is eminently adapted for stony or rocky country". I presume that in non-stony areas it might be difficult to construct as there would be a shortage of building materials!
Richard Farrant
Is it to designed to heat water? The sun's rays on the pyramid of stones and water in the gulley, and used for washing purposes, maybe clothes? Assume a plan view of this it would be circular, or is it a cross section? fv1609
IT looks like its all man made the soil dug out to form a earth retaining bank Yes indeed it was Wally but the bank has two purposes. if it is filled with water why the need to have two channels ?Not filled with water

Richard you are getting warm, it is circular & as Andy established it is a cross sectional view. But it was intended to keep water out. fv1609
Is the drawing the final state, or is it an intermediate step? Andy A shrewd question Andy, this is the final thing from a building point of view although when operational additional products will be put in place. Tony B
It loks to me similar to a drainage trench, sump put around a tent or marque.
Chris Hall
I've a few ideas but non of them are based on deduction! Something to do with fire or a defensive position like a gun pit?
Lauren Child
Building on Chris's answer, is it a fire pit to heat up the stones, providing a source of heat through the night without firelight.
