Mark Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Went for a bit of a walk a couple of months ago and came across this overlooking an estuary in Kent, anyone know where it is, a little clue there was a very famous event there to do with planes Quote
Tony B Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Looks more like the area around Dungerness, so the 'Aircraft' connection, the sound mirrors? Quote
Mark Posted December 9, 2008 Author Posted December 9, 2008 No 'fraid not, has Manston got an Estuary ?? Quote
Richard Farrant Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 anyone know where it is, a little clue there was a very famous event there to do with planes Where the bouncing bombs were tested? Seem to think that was Reculver, Quote
Degsy Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Where the bouncing bombs were tested? Seem to think that was Reculver, Yes, Barnes Wallis's bombs were tested at Reculver but I haven't the faintest where the photo was taken. Quote
radiomike7 Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Was it Medway with the Shorts connection? Quote
Mark Posted December 10, 2008 Author Posted December 10, 2008 Eastchurch ? A little further on Paul, it still has the sign there and I believe a little museumdedicated to the plane Quote
Tony B Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 If were looking at aircraft around the Medway and Sheppy take your pick. the Brabazon? Wright flyers? Shorts Sunderland and the rest. Suprising such a place (Personally not one of my favourites) should have such an avation history.:readbook: Quote
gritineye Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 (edited) Leysdown? Leysdown on Sea was home to the first aircraft-building factory in the World, the first circular mile flight was made at Shellbeach by a British pilot in a British plane that was built on land next to Muswell Manor, in 1909? Mark Posted December 10, 2008 Author Posted December 10, 2008 Shellness? Correct, the "bunker" overlooks the Swale and Faversham I assume to look for the pending invasion or such like. Shellness I believe was the site of the first powered flight in the UK, I stand to be corrected Quote
gritineye Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 I found this, looks similar though no houses nearby. Breakwater looks the same though. Quote

Shellness I believe was the site of the first powered flight in the UK, I stand to be corrected Six Wright flyers were brought over to the area, but the credit for the first powered flight in UK is to Samuel F Cody on 16th October 1908 at Farnbourough, hampshire. David Ives Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 ok sorry to upset you but chard in somerset claims to have the first powered flight in the uk heres a link http://www.chardmuseum.co.uk/Powered_Flight/ Quote
Tony B Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Wind must have been very gusty that day. :-D Anyway Did stringfellow's machine fly, or was it just a glider with a steam engine as cargo? Quote
gritineye Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Mark, the aerial pic is the one, about 1 1/2 mls south of Leysdown on sea, Apparently the area is now favored by nudists, possibly not this time of year though! The houses in the background are Shellness but look nearer in your pictures. Quote

There is a tiny beach not easy to get to but very pretty, below the Fire Hills west of Hastings, we were making our way down to it when I took a snap of it with my zoom lens, and you've guessed it full of nude men all wading in the water but facing the beach! Didn't bother going, why do they get the best places? Quote
