Richard Farrant
COP A LOAD OF THIS How many have the army? I seem to think the MoD bought about 130 Foden EKA recovery trucks, pretty sure none have been disposed off although a handful have been written off, they have all been through a mid-life overhaul. I was involved in dismantling and cutting one up in the early 90's. Would think the price would be out of range for collectors, but remains to be seen. Grasshopper
In my understanding, the wreckers are so heavy that they cannot legally be used to lift anything in civvy ownership, without exceeding axle loadings. They are very near the limit for 3 axles(24 tonnes?). That means they are pretty useless for underlift towing in private hands.
radiomike7
I seem to remember there were 333 in total which would tie in with the 280 or so MANs that are replacing them. As with the Commanders, they will probably be totally re-furbed and donated to some country that let us use its facilities in a previous conflict. As has been suggested, they are only really of use as a winching tractor or recovery crane in the UK.

Mad Cow
I hope you are wrong about disposal. As one is now at withams i suspect they will be on sale soon.If they are near weight for towing they may not be that sort after so hopefully the price will reflect that. I hope (please God make them cheap!) eka sacmmell went 15k to 20k for the best so maybe 25k ??

Mum Cartwons
How about this Foden? Nobody has mentioned the Foden FH70 gun tractor - here's one seen at Dorset a few years ago and I know its whereabouts.
antarmike
Anita Broad, in Wales. I believe she broke the Auxiliary gearbox. Don't know if someone has fixed it for here yet. She now plays Snowtrac and doesn't seem much intetrested in this one at the moment.

Mum Cartwons
Antar Mike where were you when the Foden was running about at Dorset in the Heavy Haulage ring the year after I 'broke' the gearbox? Incidentally I did not break it at all, it was looked at by a retired Foden firm specialist who mended them for the Army. He told me that it was probably pretty shot before I even had it! Steve Guest put another gear box in for me and it was that one that was doing haulage at Dorset the year before last. I have not 'lost interest in it', but driving it from the wilds of Wales to Dorset with a trailer on by myself is becoming a little too much for me, added to which I have been kicked off the Commercial Heavy Haulage team because 'it is a Military vehicle'. Also Mike my surname is not Broad - what planet have you been on for the last few years? I am welcomed in the Military section of the Great Dorset Steam Fair with whatever I bring, also 'son-in-law' as I carry the snowtrac in a lorry with living accommodation I would hesitate to say that it is that much cheaper to run. les freathy
Fodens produced a set of brochures for the low and medium mobility trucks the covers featured some nice artwork such as this one for the gun tractor
les freathy
And what do we know about this beast, one of the early prototypes for the recovery contract. This one has many different features to the truck that won the contract the most obvious here are the longer wheel base, larger cab and the recovery unit which is by the looks of it a underlift and a body similar to the Scammell Crusader

Edd
Withams have listed the recovery Foden under direct sales. Price guide is £35k and it says that a few bits have been removed!!! Looks like they are going by it being the first one out and people prepared to pay silly money. Ed Direct link: http://www.mod-sales.com/direct/vehicle/,31,/17625/Foden.htm# Looks quite tidy but I would think it has been canibalised because the parts are no longer available. Also, why take bits off a good one to repair another, it could well be that it has other faults. Don't forget that Witham set the guide price and act as agents, the ministry have the ultimate say on reserve price. The guide price on the S26s was £12.5k when they first arrived last January, and most of you know what I paid. Mike
