MHillyard Posted April 6, 2014 Share Posted April 6, 2014 Hi All I picked up a collection of aircraft dials at the local car boot a week ago now. The person I bought them from doesn't know where they came from but all seem to be from one collection so possibly all of the same aircraft. One has two labels one of which states it came from Vulcan XA903. I believe this Vulcan is currently under restoration in Scotland and had special instruments and modifications to test the Olympus 953 engine. Could these be instruments for this test or from before or after (this dial was removed in the 70's i believe from the label). There is another dial with masking tape around it which states XH560 which is another Vulcan under restoration in Marham I believe. This perhaps scraps the idea of them being the special Olympus test instruments. Anyway can anyone tell from the images below whether the rest are Vulcan dials or just generic post-war dials? I may end up getting in contact with the restorers of XA903 or XH560 but would like to know what the other dials are from first. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

As much as I like the dials I feel that if they are needed for a restoration then I may let them go to a good home. Does anyone happen to know what the Monitor Unit Type H thing is? I have a lot of FAP1086 of the 1980s-90s the earliest is 1984 but there is only one 6A item! That is 6A/2205 which is a mach switch for a Nimrod. I assume by then everything else that was not obsolete was NATO codified. The earliest RAF fiche I have of NSNs is 1994 & that doesn't list your switch although there are some surrounding NSNs. 6A/4097 does by chance throw up a French NSN for a part for a US made Caterpillar but that is of no relevance! I have AP129 1955 that covers aircraft instruments, indeed gives functional detail of most of the instruments you have. In machmeters it only goes to Mk 3A & not mention of your type or Monitor Unit Type H. So an hour of rummaging has turned up nothing useful I'm afraid! I did email to see if they had any contact details in regard to the wanted section but haven't had a reply. I have been having a few email troubles so it may be that they never received the email so will try again at some point.
