Insurance on back of MVT magazine.

Recommended Posts

Hunting around for insurance for an Alvis Spartan I've had quite a few quotes, some very reasonable. Today for the first time ever I was refused a quote by a company that has a back full page spread in the most recent MVT magazine telling everyone how good they are and "we can tailor the cover to meet your needs"

This is the first refusal of insurance I've ever had - clearly in my opinion, they are not up to the mark when it comes to Military Vehicles and the MVT needs review whether this company should be on advertising in their magazine.

Now of course I have to declare I've been refused insurance on an Alvis Spartan, which most insurance brokers will not have a clue about. I may as well declare I've been refused cover on a spaceship :-)

The best quote I've had comes in at £125 from a little known company called Glynwood Insurance Services.

I'm sorry you can't get cover, I use the company mentioned and I have had nothing but First Class service from them over the years, so it may just be they do not understand the vehicle type and you need to get to actually speak to someone higher up who can help you. Currently I insure my '43 Ford GPW, Chevrolet G7107, Capri 2.8, Skoda Estelle :-D, London Taxi and a Lambretta LI 150 with them and they always go out of their way to help. :)

Nothing is worlds apart when your an insurer trying to wriggle out of a claim.

Thats my point Ringing up and asking to insure a 17 year old on a Ferrari and the lady on the phone saying sorry mr X but we cant insure that risk .

Is worlds apart from the company refusing a claim for a deceitful declaration. Or refusing to renew your policy because you have had too many claims for example that is my interpretation of refused insurance.

Me too.

For years I had the 2 Pigs, 2 Shorlands, 2 Wolves, Hornet & Cypher Office insured with them. Only ever made one claim & that was dealt with the minimum of fuss. I have fewer vehicles now but most years I up the value to reflect restoration levels & the market value. There is no fuss as long as it is supported with an explanation & photos.

Oooh, Skoda Estelle, nice. Was looking at getting one months ago. Had a customer once, many moons ago, who had its engine totally tuned. Rare as hens teeth now.

With the greatest of respect Lee, you have missed the point, Diana was helping us as owners with her experiences with this broker!

With the greatest of respect Lindsay, the title mentioned the MVT & it looks like to me questioning of the MVTs advertising policies?? If so should be directed to the MVT. My opinion not HMVF's

Any way I recommend FMJ 's

And that's my point - define an insurance companies meaning of "refusal". Of course I'm quite happy if anyone will cover my losses free of charge based on the fact that an insurance company "refused to quote" - just send me the contract in writing please.

Lee, Diana wasn't questioning MVTs advertising, as I said before, she was making us owners aware of the problems she encountered when trying to obtain a quote.

What is your problem with that? Surely this forum is a platform for sharing information for the benefit of all of us!!

Just a ponderance, but have you tried phoning back to see if it was a mistake?

I phoned one of the insurance companies to get my vehicles insured and the person who answered the phone hadn't got a clue about MVs (of the "it's not on my system, is it a Capri?" type). After some chatting and referring to the special page on their website she suddenly realised I needed to be put through to a special team, after which it all went smoothly.

We're all only human, so mistakes do happen.

Your interpretation of my posting is incorrect and misleading.

Nowhere have I stated I am questioning the MVT's advertising policy. If any Organisation takes an advert in good faith then it cannot be held responsible.

If subsequently it is found that an advert is misleading then the advertiser is responsible and any reputable organisation carrying that advert would be expected to look at such an advert.

The advert clearly carries the words "WE CAN TAILOR THE COVER REQUIRED TO MEET YOUR NEEDS" notwithstanding that there are factors that would blatantly deny me insurance - and there are not as I have had my Ferret with Adrian Flux for a number of years, as well as Churchill with my car, then they clearly cannot tailor their cover to meet my needs.

Hence the advert is in my opinion, and based on my experience, misleading.

And yes they did know it was an Alvis Spartan and they appeared to know of a Spartan too.

Insurance Brokers and Insurance Companies can be worlds apart at times....

No names mentioned - I had all my vehicles insured with one of the more well-known brokers for a couple of year before buying the OT-90. When I tried to add it to my policy the broker told me flat out "our insurance company won't touch tracked vehicles" - so I went else where with all my little fleet. Got a better quote from another broker even with the OT so went with them and when I got the paperwork through - lo and behold - it was with the same insurance company!!

I think the Brokers impose their own arcane set of rules for quoting which are unique to each brokerage.....

Diana, I think Neil has hit the nail on the head here, you haven't been refused insurance by an insurance company or underwriter (which is usually done because of bad driving/claims record or non disclosure of previous convictions etc.) but merely not met the random requirements of a broker, who rightly or wrongly thinks you don't meet their 'specialist' requirements.

Maybe speak to the owner/someone at the top and try to pin down what exactly is the problem, even if you get a ridiculous quote that makes you feel better than refusal.

They work in mysterious ways sometimes, one broker really really wanted to insure Rugged Robin so he could use it in their advertizing as an example of how they could insure any vehicle, but he was unable to come anywhere hear the quote I already had from another broker, so I didn't go with him.

Last year I tried to insure the jeep for road use with a well known Military Vehicle insurer -with whom I had insured the jeep for many years - either on-road or laid-up during the latest restoration -only to be told that they wouldn't cover the jeep now because it was "American"

It beggars belief - why trumpet that you offer MV insurance if you don't cover one of the most archetypical MVs......

After doing both my Mr Grumpy and Mr Angry acts, I seem to recall that they relented as I was an existing customer, but I'd heard enough by then and went somewhere else on principle.

This morning's experience of getting quotes from the providers advertising in Windscreen has not been good - I'm still waiting for at least two of them to ring me back despite promises of ringing me back within 10 minutes - and that was getting on for an hour ago - a very lacklustre service

PS by 1.45pm still no response from either RH Classic insurance or from Peter Best Insurance - they clearly don't want the business.......

Seems a bit of a waste of time even ringing them in retrospect
