Zero-Five-Two
Is anybody up to speed with regard to the laws for maximum rear overhang or rather bits that stick out on a truck. I have refitted the earth anchor on to the back of my Militant. Stood back and looked at it, and thought, it does stick out a bit, well actually it sticks out a lot, just short of a metre in fact, with sharp pointy bits as well I plan on making a protective cover for it when on the road, but should it have extra lights or something else on it. Any one know for definite?
Ed Batchelor
It was 6feet unless its changed recently. Some people cut a car tyre in half and stick the 2 pieces over the sharp bits on the anchors. I have seen others paint them with red and white stripes. cosrec
You are allowed 50% of the wheelbase hung out the back of the vehicle so you are well in. But i cant tell you how near the lights and other markers have to be to this piont

Zero-Five-Two
Many thanks for the replies gents. Looks like I was panicking about nothing. But the way I was thinking, if some clown in his hot hatch doesn't see it sticking out, it'll could spoil his day. Wont hurt the Militant, though! RattlesnakeBob
pah never mind the clown in the hot hatch! heheh!.....know what you mean though. I would have thought as long as you have some vivid black and yellow stripes on your 'cover' you'll be fine .... .your actual overhang is nowhere near illegal anyways but you're gonna be well covered legally/liability wise etc if its ridiculously 'visible' to even the most stupid clown in a hot hatch! philb
In the old days (1950's) there was a limit of 3' 6" projection beyond the tail lamps. Does anyone know what the current limit is? Doesn't look like you'll exceed that, Rob.
philb
Here's a reference: http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/commons/1953/apr/24/new-clause-rear-lights-on-vehicles-with
Degsy
It definitely needs to be covered when on the road otherwise Plod couldbe interviewing you with regard to a dangerous vehicle ie sharp projections.
