Love that Renault 4. Welcome to the Friendly Forum.

When you get time tell us all about it. We do like something different!

But please also let us see more of your GMC and the bikes.

Will you be joining us at W & P this year?

Cheers!

Daf YA 126 (my grandpa behind the wheel:D)

I really would like to go this year but the booking is already closed

But next year we'll be there for sure :-D

I took the R4 twice before to the war and peace show, first in 2002.

I couldn't find a picture of it at Beltring, but I've found these pictures how it looked at that time.

on our way home

A friend of mine, Paul rebuilt my R4. He also converted it to run on LPG. He's the owner of the LWB Reo M36A2 in front of the R4 on the ferry.

This toy we took with us in 2001

bombi13ph.jpg

It's a Bombardier Bombi

Bombi was used by the RAF on some tropical island. We took Bombi in 2002 too and traded it for a 4x4 GMC Ambulance which we'll take along next year because it is getting a major facelift and restoration right now.

Here are some other pics from my GMC

I'm restoring this one, it has both wooden rims and splashguards.

Sniper is there really enough room in the back for stretchers or were the wounded kept in a seated position ?

Whats the ground clearance like and whats the engine access like ?

Abn, the little Renault 4 first came out in 1960. They are remakable little vehicles. The original was an 850cc 4 pot liquid cooled engine, later ones were 1100. the gear box 4 speed was mounted in front of the engine, front wheel drive. They are independent suspension, my trick to show off was to run two wheels on a 45 degree bank and two on the road, someone tried the same stunt with a convertable Triumph Vittesee, but that's another story.

The van came in SWB and LWB. The short had a capacity of 784 pounds (7cwt in UK old Money) the long 1232 pounds (11 cwt) the equivalent Ford Escort van of the time had 5 cwt capacity. The only problem with them was Michelin X tyres, they were totally ******* the vehicle wouldn't stay on the road! Renault fitted Michelin as standard and the vehicle got a bit of a reputation. I fitted Kliber musd and snow to mine and it would go anywhere , if you did push your luck they were light enough to pick up and carry. As Sniper said there was a bolt on 4x4 system (Though some *** person SOLD IT!!) I always wanted one of those, but at £600 it was the same cost as the vehicle. There was a pick up version as well. A far superior vehicle to it's rival the 2CV.

You can flip the passenger seat, and then there is enough room for a stretcher

You can set the ground clearance on different hights.

Mine engine is a 1100

So what year is yours? As you might have guessed I've a soft spot for the little beasts. Didn't the French build a light utility topless version as well? Must go hunting for a picture.

Mine is frome 1985

Yes I noticed.

And yes the french army build a topless version, there is a black/white from it on the web but I couldn't find it (in 5 min.)

  • 2 weeks later...

A little bit last minute, but I'm going to beltring with my R4:-D.

I only don't have booked, because the renault wasn't ready and I thought that I wasn't able too finish it on time.

Now I'm going but I don't know if i can show him on the showground or if I have to park it out side.

Is it posible that I can enter as a late entry vehicle or something?
