Good point. There is a pub adjacent to the former Garrison at Shoeburyness called the Captain Mannering. I think this is done this way for the same reason, though they do have a face not unlike Arthur Lowe's in the pub sign. Never been in, though.

My watering hole is The Ship at Leigh On Sea.

 

Not really on topic but I've spent many an evening at the ship, lovely pub. Usually in English Civil War kit and the last time we went there, the barman looked up from his chat with some people at the bar and said "Oh it's those Russians again" :-D
