Still waiting for the Scammell register to get back with some news of my registration but i geuss they are looking for the build details to get an age related plate. I did phone Footman James for an insurance quote and they said £140 fully comp which i thougt was ok looking out the window at the 12 tons of it sitting there. Not quite sure why they wanted to know what size engine was in it:nut: Its not like its a hot rod:cheesy:

 

Whatever you do -- don't mention the Q plate -- they'll trace it and you can't get rid of it so you'll have to pay the dreaded tax

 

Looking at your Army number, the date in service was 1951, possibly early 52. You will need some kind of evidence of the age, so the Scammel register is a good place to go, but if you don't get any joy, join the MVT -- they have a host of experts who can verify the age and give you a letter for the DVLA which will be considered as proof of age. Worth the cost of a membership I can assure you, and you get four excellent top quality magazines to boot.

 

DVLA will have to inspect the Scammell and they'll be looking for chassis numbers, so you'll need to clean up the die stamp on the chassis rail so they can read it.

 

I've taxed mine as a "historic vehicle" and that's all you need to declare for tax exemption. You will also need to fill in an MOT exemption form to get your tax disc. Don't know what the local DVLA are like near you, but I found ours extremely helpful, although it did take them a couple of weeks to come round the house to inspect the chassis number

 

£140 for insurance? I pay £60 fully comp and four named drivers. They did ask me if I wanted restricted mileage and of course I said yes. 2000 miles OK? they said -- Crikey -- I haven't got time to drive it 2000 miles -- have you any idea how long that will take? says I!

 

Tip of the day -- shop around fo a quote!

 

Word of warning though -- something I learned the hard way -- you'll need to insure the vehicle at the time the chassis is inspected. Your insurance company will only insure a chassis number for 12 days. If you need to extend that time they'll charge you an additional sum, so make sure you get the timing right!

David Walker from the scammell register has been and inspected last month as the scammell register are on the DVLA's list of clubs so hopefully all we need is the bit of paper from the Scammell records. if not they said they would give me the number of a man with some military records. I got a message asking if i wanted age related or the Q plate so the dvla must have found it on their records. It's fingers crossed at the mo. I was all set to go to see the dvla but going through the club ment much less paper work and the someone from the club can come to inspect for nothing plus i was hopeing they will find the info on the build:)

Who do you insure with? mine was for unlimited milage fully comp valued at £8000. I am ONLY 33 years old with 3 points on my licence. It seems with insurance there will always be someone with the same vehicle who is paying a fraction of what your paying.

I also pay £170 for the landy series 3 with 2.8 turbo, big wheels and plenty of other mods all declared to footman James. My mate pay £90 for his standard series one (which i would like to cut up and and fit a v8 in):angel:

Got our trucks with Equity Red Star Services. RH Specialist Insurance Division 01277 206911. Your right with insurance companys though, no rhyme or reason to the calculations. I was given a tip -- always put a female on the insurance -- it reduces the premium. No one with an ounce of sanity could imagine my missus behind the wheel of the Scammell. That's got as much chance of happening as you chopping up your mates series one -- nice idea though! -- like your thinking!

Thanks I've had it about 4 years now so realy looking forward to driving on the road. hopefully running on veg oil. I can't afford the fuel at the current prices. slight mix up at the scammell club so they only sent of the forms last week:nut: hey ho no rush

Yey!! got the registration through for the Scammell! 728 YUD:yay: Just got a few little jobs to do such as a pipe on the diesel return, fitting the mirrors and some side reflectors. I've also got to drain the diesel tank and refil it with white diesel:argh::(:( Anyway its all registerd and insured so hopefully in week or two when i can afford the fuel..........:drive:

Personally I'd just drain the tank, and run it on the filters. You'd be very unlucky to have anyone test them. Within a handful of miles you'll have put a gallon of white diesel through them anyway.

 

I hope your first drive on the road is more successful than mine. I travelled less than half a mile before having fuel trouble. Eventually managed about a mile before admitting defeat, and got a tow to my new workshop behind a friends Unimog. It made the mog work hard up and down the hills through the local lanes! Since then it's never needed towing, but had several more difficult trips with fuel issues, until I cut a large hole in the bottom of the tank, and scraped out an inch of sediment!

 

The only issue I still have is an electrical one, where the original electrical cut out intermittently cuts out leaving me with no indicators or starter. I'm used to the big spark, clunk and general noise when shorting the starter solenoid to get going again when it happens.

a tiny bit more progress this last week:) Mirrors are on, All the lights are fitted and wired. Nice shiny number plates are fitted, god damn it's even got a windscreen wiper! Chopped up my old leather belt to make some check straps for the doors and then set about draining the diesel tank. I first fitted a primer bulb in the fuel line so i could actually bleed the thing when i refilled the tank after the last attempt revealed that there were no internals in the engine primer pump. The bung was removed from the tank and some very dark brown fuel was drained, at this point i thought it was best to remove the sump on the tank and have a look inside. OH MY GOD......1" of....er.....muddy goo like watery brown nastyness:wow: Tomorrows job is to stick the pressure washer in it and a bottle of fairy liquid then whack a disposable BBQ under it with the airline jabbed in the filler. Oh i have even bought new batteries for the video camera:cool2:

I'll hang on to the other one but might have to buy another pair for brake leavers and gear stick. Best to cut down the lenth and make it cone shaped and lace it up. I fitted the end on the chrome rod with the jubalee clip on the inside. It does ruffle up a bit but looks ok and keeps the crud at bay. you can see my ram as i have removed the steel plates off the track box so its much easyer to oil everything. I will take a piccy of said trowser leg and post it:-D

The filter was not there. funny thing is, as i undid the bolts holding the cover on i could smell old petrol:shocked: Also noticed the pickup pipe is quite a large diameter so i would think any large particals of dirt would not manage to be sucked up in the relatively slow flow of fuel up the pipe.

 

 

 

Oh...........I also went for a drive too:drive: the first time out propper since i bought it 5 years ago!!
