The season to be jolly

I took my daughters out shopping today, and I was quite suprised to see a full Santas grotto in action. My daughters (unsuprisingly) failed to take up the option of paying £3.50 to sit on a strangers lap in the dark while he bestowed a present upon them. Rather dissapointingly, Santas little (and rather attractive) helper failed to take up the offer of sitting on my lap in the dark while i bestowed a suprise upon her (and i was going to pay her £3.50 for the privellage). I am now at my parents house drinking Scrumpy Jack and cautiously wondered if anybody else was feeling the Christmas spirit as well?

Thats a blow. Sorry to hear about that.

However, having now further imbibed of the Christmas spirit I extend good will to all men (with the exclusion of your council) and have decided to compose the 1st HMVF Christmas carol - "The twelve days of Jacks Christmas". Actually i will not be able to finish it this evening, so i will start off and you can add to it as you see fit.

Sorry to hear that Dave ! What is your line of work ! Maybe a forum member has a job to help out ! I think all the doom and gloom on the news is not helping ! They should try reporting FACTS not how bad some "expert" thinks the economy is going to get ! :argh:

I am one of those most reviled & untrustworthy individuals - a builder !

Our family firm has been going since 1889 & is now run by my brother & myself with two lads who work for us . We are one of those old fashioned country builders who can do pretty much anything asked of us . We don't build houses anymore - last one was 1971 I think , these days we seem to gravitate towards restoration work on older properties & working in timber although last year we mostly spent building a new recording studio . We've been saying that there's a recession going on all year long but as we are only menials we don't count - now it has started to affect the merchant bankers (make of that what you will) suddenly it matters .

I've not taken any holiday for the last two years so I'm going to use some of that & maybe get some of those jobs done on the house & hope next year improves. Fortunately I have some savings to fall back on if needs be & there's always the toys to sell if I get desperate .

As always , thanks for the good wishes everybody

Reasons to be cheerful :-

1. It's my Grandaughter Elizabeth's first Christmas, and she and her Mum and Dad (My Eldest Daughter) will be joining us for Christmas Dinner. My Wife (Granny) has already got the tree and decorations on the go, and the bib with 'Baby's First Christmas'.

Elizabeth will be at Beltring next July, and we are all very much looking forward to it.

2. VAT has just come down, and I can now afford that new camera for Christmas, so I can take photos of my new Grandaughter.

I have a modicum of Christmas spirit- even though I'm getting a letter in January inviting me to fluff off from my employer of 23 years. In honest truth, they might ask me back in very short order; so the will he-won't he thing is driving me a little more bananas than I normally am.

I took the MUTT out for a spin yesterday and the simple truth is that all the problems just fade away when I am behind the wheel.

I wish good things for all our friends on HMVF and send special greeting to those in difficulty in these rubbishy times. No names, no packdrill. You are in OUR thoughts.
