The Scorpion in the last but one pic. I bet it has production roadwheels fitted.

Wouldn't it be clever of Bovvy to swap the inside roadwheels from this Scorpion with the spoked prototype outside roadwheels on the display Scorpion so that they both look like all Scorpions in service, not (in the case of the one on display) the handful of prototypes?

So many goodies , so little time . When I visited there in the late 80's they had two prototype halftracks for testing, I recall they had Land Rover fronts :schocked: with some kind of British tank track system for the rear half. I wondered if any one knew what became of them ? :dunno:

Centaur. I (and Baz) was in Aliwal Barracks Tidworth 76 - 77 and saw the Centaur travelling from wherever out onto the driver training area on the plain just at the back of our camp.

The Centaur was not a great success and was dropped but there has always been a rumour that one found its way to the Middle East and used as a desert/border patrol vehicle but i've never heard any specific country named.

Re the Centaur,

They are/were 110 LR fronts and CVRT tracks and suspension, they were to have a MG mount and even trialled with a 30mm Rarden mounted. They weren't reliable/tough enough and they literally were shook to bits over rough country.

L R Madnes sitelists as follows-:

Prototype 1 Sent to Libya, believed still there

" 2 Sales tour to African states, later restored, now owned by PA Blanchard

3 Altered for testing as HT comms vehicle, later converted back to soft top, owned by PA Blanchard.

4 Extensively tested in Oman, fitted with 2 mg's

5 Demonstrator, used in Germany and Persian Gulf now in Tank Museum

6 Demonstrated in Iraq circa 1980 then found February 2005 at Taji north of Baghdad. Rescued by REME fr restoration.

7 Built later 110 coil sprung front end, only one painted sand now at Tank Museum.

8 Never finished, would have been second 110 coiler.

They were built by Laird at Llynfaes Anglesey (just across the Bay fromwhere I live) in a factory that was used to build and repair Catalinas during WW2. It now builds refuse vehicles but the concrete launch slip is still there and still usable.

David,

I believe you are in East Sussex, and what you are refering to is a Canadian Fox, they were a copy of the Humber, but using Chevrolet running gear.
