Sankey 1/2 ton Reg numbers

Recommended Posts

Evening gents,

Trying to find out generally what series of reg number LETTERS were allocated to Sankey half ton trailers, both Mk1 & 2.

Ideally a Mk1 between say 1954 & 1965.......& Mk2 of about 1968 to 1976 vintage.

I've trawled through some 'Sankey related' posts here already, hoping to drop on the answer & found one that mentions 'ET' & 'ER' on Sankey trailers .... but I thought ET & ER were allocated to Stalwarts :nut:

Can anyone confirm please ?

Cheers.

H

Hi Howard,

ET was used on trailers and ER was used on Land Rovers, Bedford RL's, etc. as well. Remember there are 9,999 permutations for each group of letters. Go to the MAFVA club website and you will find what the letter groups were used for and selection of examples and dates.

regards, Richard

Not a half-tonner, but my old 3/4 ton narrow-track (now sold) was 15 ES 23. I bought it at the last ever Ruddington auction, and later found Commando badging and arctic white paint on it under the green/black. I (reluctantly) sold it around 10 years ago due to a lack of space to park it.

The last of the "narrow-tracks" , were built abt. 1975 , IIRC on a "GB" plate

There are a few minor detail differences.

1. No brass baler hex. plugs at underside corners (to shut & float as dinghy).

2. The tub bodyside plates are "lay-flat" and spot-welded on.

3. The transom has a flap

a) used for sticking a stand pipe for tap when a bowser tank fitted.

b) reliably informed that this was in fact opened to sink the trailer fast when deep water wading off landing craft , Lightweights had upper tailgate removed to sink fast for 4 x4 , other Land Rovers had the tail-gate lowered & fitted with struts.

Shortly after came the Mk.1 "wide-track" with tailgate , mechanically same as last of line narrowtrack , A frame , drum brakes , IIRC - same leg stands.

ISTR - the earliest 3/4 ton narrowtrack (Mk3) that I have had was on a EN plate. abt. 1964
