  1. Sorry cant take a pic as there is nothing there !!! I have fitted a one piece side opening door to the rear of my SWB 88" Land Rover which has the handle on it but what I am after is the door catch which is fixed to the vehicle body on the side edge where the tailgate would have shut up to :undecided: which would hold the door shut.
  2. Ok, yep I can understand that, but say you have an American pickup truck which has a MAM of say 4000Kg and is towing a trailer with a MAM of 3500Kg's so the total would be 7500Kg's is this ok.
  3. No ! as the post title says as a roadworthy check to prove any maintenance which has been or would be carried out on it, would be of a safe standard and suitable to be used on the road.
  4. Cant really see that as this is only a query and as current regs deem it to not to require an MOT I was just wondering if once plated that then overruled the exemption ?
  5. Errrrr well if it was over 3500Kg's it would need plating, wouldn't it or would an MOT place do a roadworthy check and issue a certificate.

I have been pondering this for a while now, seeing Transits towing plant trailers with diggers ect even say horse boxes and rice trailers, got me thinking about this and I have been looking at various License's, on them it generally says C1+E less than or equal to 12000Kg, then clause 107, which refers to ... Not More Than 8250Kg. So with C1+E and 107 which seems a common clause max total weight is 8250Kg. Well how would this weight be made up bearing in mind some vehicles are capable of towing more than their own weight: Tow vehicle and Towed load ( trailer and load ) Say 3500Kg + 4750Kg ? 4000Kg + 4250Kg ? 6000Kg + 2250Kg ? If this is the case does it matter as long as you do not go over the 8250Kg, as most hitches I have seen don't go above 3500Kg, what hitch would you need to exceed 3500Kg ?
  7. If someone was to get a truck ( over 3.5 tons ) M.O.T. ( not plated ) to confirm it being roadworthy, despite it not being a requirement, once plated would it then have to be done every year after or could it then be missed for several years ?
  8. Ok then, lets see if I have got this right. 1 vehicle insured, taxed and MOT'd on the road all ok. 2 vehicle sorned and off the road so no insurance needed. 3 vehicle off the road before sorn came into effect never been sorned no insurance needed.

As far as I know the rear spring mountings are the same, but due to the shape and positions of the types of diff which are in slightly different positions too on the axles the torque rods are fixed to the axles in different places, the banjo torque rods are longer ( I think ) Looking at the two chassis in a book I have the rear cross members seem to be in the same place but torque rod mountings are in different places. So it looks like the only cross member which is different is the transfer box one, Ahh the front springs and spring hangers are different too.... Good luck.
  10. Ok well I am going to make myself look silly now, nothing unusual there !!! Looking at the front spring hanger I would say it's a banjo axle'd truck :nut:

Well done for the challenge of taking on such a rebuild, but did you intend on using the whole new chassis, if so do you know if the new chassis in the above pics on the trailer had split axles or banjo axles fitted to it, the reason I say this is there are 2 types of chassis one for split axles and the other for banjo axles they are very different, all to do with the mounting of the transfer box all the axles they have different cross members and torque rods are also different lengths too !!!!!!!! The torque rods are also hard to get so keep them and look after them. Just thought you said you were new to GMC's so just some more help the 2 types of axles refer to the diff casing : Split type: diff case looks like two funnels bolted together ( your old axles ) Banjo type: diff case look like old Land Rover axles one solid case and axle tubes and the diff bolts in to the diff case. Torque rods: these are the things which locate the rear axles to the chassis stops them moving backwards and forwards. Hope this helps good luck.
  13. Rather than welding how about brazing them after all they are going to get painted, have see people do this to various bits on old motorbikes, also easier to sand down to a good contour, good luck.
  14. Hi all, I have now got round to fitting the rear door today on my Land Rover, which I am converting from a truck cab to full hard top. I now need to know how the door latch works, and fixes to the bit on the edge of the rear body, a couple of pics would be great, the catch on the door is the old style not the crows foot type latch.

I have been rummaging in my TM and other GMC type books and the only thing I can turn up is in The GMC A Universal Truck by Jean-Michel Boniface Page 12 there is a GMC engine on the floor and the oil filter is in view, the filter is a grey colour and there is a decal on the side of it in an oval shape just like the post of the Sherman oil filters by Deadline. Maybe of help.

This is very confusing if the original filter housings had the decals on them how come there aren't any around on trucks these days ? you would think that the housings would not have been changed at a service so why are they so rare !! Did they actually run out of grey decaled housings and went over to using generic housings which were black ? Good work though, keep it up.
  18. Does anyone know if the shells for the M2-A1 105mm Howitzer are the same as the 105mm Pack Howitzer ?

  20. Well what can I say, no words can say what I think of my wife... ( and they are GOOD words ) she is up for anything, helping me in the garage getting oily, dirty, she loves the smell of gear oil !!!!!!! she loves the events we go to, road runs whatever, whether its raining shining or windy, and over the years we have had a good dose of that. She even encouraged me to get the gun, as she says you cant take the money with you so spend it while you can enjoy it and boy are we trying to ... Hey what more can I say... She really IS the best wife in the world and she is mine forever :hug::hug: PS sorry about the sloppy bit at the end.. :cool2:

  22. Do the reasons for selling outweigh the reasons for keeping it, you know you should keep it dont you ....
  23. Well moving on a bit then does any one know what sort of chain would have been used to make snow chains, and with reference to my original post what would the spikes / studs be made of and how would they have been fixed to the chain links, look like spot welded but not sure ???
