  1. On remote gear change boxes does the selector not just come up out of the top of the box and then have the strange wobbly rods and bushes ect to get it to the cab ?
  2. Are you talking about the engine or both the engine and gearbox ? With ref to the UPS vans in the states would you have any idea what the gross weight would be for one ? As the truck has a low range would the torque not be multiplied lots, so even with a larger diesel engine in high range the torque would be less than in a low range gear ? Also with the potential for 5 Tons load on road, which it would be nowhere near ! What do you think ? Dont think I want to go down the route of an auto on the original engine, not that they are damn fine engines, did think of the Bedford MJ ? but as people have said it is longer than the 270 so would need lots of jiggery pokery to fit, just airing towards diesel with manual syncro or auto box.
  3. Not really a problem for me but might be thinking of a 353 for Rosie as a load carrier, she could well get the hang of double-de clutching but the thing which gives me the willies is if she was to miss a down change going down hill !!! think she might panic. If she is going to drive one I want to try and make it as easy as possible so she gets to like it rather than having to drive it.
  4. Yes I am aware of the 302 and the fact it will almost fit straight in, depending on the exact model and year of the 302. But that engine is still petrol !! and was thinking if I fitted a diesel it would be a bit more economical !
  5. yesterday tried to access the Artillery thread from the main page, nothing would happen! also tried it again at home still the same, now all is ok ! oh well back to the grind.
  6. I suppose there is a reason for this ?
  7. :cool2::cool2::cool2::cool2::cool2::cool2: maybe !!!!!!!!! I am trying to understand how this type of system worked I thought that the foot pedal was on air and the only hydraulic bit was from the air over hydraulic master/slave cylinder unit to the wheel cylinders but it seems that it is just like the vac/hydraulic set up on the GMC but with air pressure rather than vac !!!
  8. Can anyone shed some light on this type of vehicle brake set up, are all the systems the same is one type better than another ? is there more air on some systems ? are the front and back separate circuits ?
  9. I am trying to get together a list and pics of the maintenance tools for these guns and also does anyone know how the barrels of these guns were changed in the field, what type of crane was used to remove the barrel or was it man power !!! Would the guns have been returned to a workshop for this to be carried out. Are there any pic of this sort of thing going on or any more information. Did separate barrels come in a crate if so what did it look like. Any information on these sort of line would be great.
  10. Thanks Mike, I suppose you know the spec of these engines !! would they have a higher max revs than 2750 ? what about HP ? what would they have been fitted to if they are only 4 pot I thought most trucks over 3 to 4 tons were 6 pot ?
  11. As Vince says very friendly and relaxed show over 4 days, here are a few pics of mine. Steam powered Gallopers stationary Going round quite fast Showman's engines supplying electric for lighting on gallopers Organ Same organ in daylight
  12. No not me at the moment I am quite happy double de clutching and struggling up the hills, but might be considdering a 353 for Rosie and while I think she could master the double de clutching bit, I think it would be better for a full auto, thinking about it a diesel might be a good idea to ....... hmmmm got to get a truck first. So a Cummins diesel any idea what auto would fit and be able to cope with the truck and load of say 8 tons. ( truck 5 tons ish plus 3 tons ish load.... )
  13. Yes thats the truck, interested in fitting an auto box in to a 353 to make it easier to drive maybe for the wife !!!!!
  14. Does anyone out there know much about the replacement truck which was used lots in Vietnam its the one with a bigger engine 302 I think and had an auto gearbox, the front is identifiable as it has large holes in the front bumper edges. Would the engine and box fit a GMC CCKW353 ?
  15. So moving on a bit if your new phone does not work very well does that make it a " Paranoid Android " so if you have a dodgy phone you can say its a "Marvin" :cool2::cool2:
  16. Series Land Rovers, there are still so many about that has to say something about them ! Basic and easily fixable almost anywhere, their chassis are a box section so considering the majority are still original and were used by farmers on the fields ect, caked in mud, then on to the buyer who wanted it for 4x4 off roading, once fed up with that then sold it on, I think they are doing well. The Jeep has a " C " section chassis so cant possibly rot as you cant fill it with water and mud, well not much. Much the same as the Bedfords and almost all Trucks have a " C " section chassis, I wonder what people would be saying now if the Series Land Rovers had been designed with a " C " section chassis. I know a couple of Land Rover owners who have had them from almost new and looked after them, these are still strong and drive well. Just my bit. What a shame the Great British Empire and we cant produce anything now....
  17. He would need a whole fleet of GMC's to do that......
  18. For vehicle winches which are electric I don't think there are any cut-outs they just rely on the motor stalling which I think could be a bit risky say if you are on the first layer how do they calculate the cable dia. !!!
  19. Have not been past there for a few months but pretty sure its still there......
  20. Yes I think you are right it was built too late to see action, but is of the same design as the war time ones, a big beast at approx 350 feet long. It was featured in a MVT Windscreen mag some time ago and has been moored at Pounds yard for many years waiting the gas axe  surley its too important to loose forever....... How can I post bits out of a MVT mag ? http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=50.828402,-1.093606&spn=0.001535,0.005493&t=h&z=18
  21. LST in Portsmouth needs saving Pounds marine just off M275 on right going into portsmouth
  22. Please pass this to the owner. I need contact details asap to be able to reach the owner of the Mack truck FLOOZY and 155mm Long tom gun. Please help. Thanks
  23. Thought I would put in my bit as it seems to be going off topic a bit, but I thought there were only regulations and testing certs for lifting machines and equipment. As far a I am aware there are no regulations for winching, try and get cert for an electric winch when you buy one I have never seen one, this is why they state on them "not to be used for lifting" their get out clause. Then what about what you fix it to and what bolts you use and is it bolted to a rusty chassis where do you stop :nut:
