REME 245
Are Insurance companies able to issue documents on a vehicle chassis number or only the Registration Number. Premium Choice formly Roadsure are insisting on issuing 90 day cover notes untill such time as I get my Universal Carrier Road registered. woa2
My Ford WOT2 didn't have a registration number as it was used by a garage as a breakdown truck and ran on Trade Plates. When I restored it (took 5 years) and was ready to put it back on the road, I insured it on the Chassis number before getting it MoT'd and then taxed with a registration number issued at this point. This was back in 1983, however.

As long as you have a form of vehicle identification there should be no problem. Racing cars are not road registered and you can get insurance for those. Premium choice tried a similar stunt with me only they threatened to cancel the policy within 14 days if I did not come up with a registration number, this was after speaking to a number of representatives and explaining that the T had never been road registered and explaining to them the process by which you get a registration document. I was forced to write a rather stern email to which I had an apology but they still don’t really understand what sort of vehicle I have (despite pictures). The T is insured as a pick-up because they claim not have a suitable category! Edited September 22, 2008 by Adrian typos
sirhc
We have insured all our vehicles with Footman James, none were registered when we got them. Never been a problem!
Stormin
The T is insured as a pick-up because they claim not have a suitable category! Why don't you use one of the specialist insurers as advertised on this forum? I insured my Bedford MJ on the chassis number alone for a few months before getting is tested and then road registered. No problem whatsoever with Footman James insurance. julezee001
When my brother finally put the Militant on the road he insured it on the chassis number for running to the M.O.T. test, and then had to drive it to the LVLO, then in central Brighton, for it to be registered! Although someone from the same office came out to home to check the chassis number on a Landrover to register it? If you don't intend to road register it, I would have thought one of the many insurance companies would cover it. Jules

I only joined them because Roadsure had (at the time) a good reputation with MV’s. I was with Footman James for many years on their classic car scheme and was always very pleased with their service. Definitely a contender for next year, unlike PC!:nono:

Tony B
Seems to be who you talk to . Roadsure cover my military's and both modified Range Rover and moddidid Land Rover, no problems. The problem was the Volvo, 'Sorry we'd love to help , but we don't cover normal cars'.
REME 245
As you say it very much depends on who you speak to. There is one guy that I have been put through to in the past who seemed to be an expert on Historic Vehicles, but 99% of the time expert to speak to someone use to insuring Ford Escorts. Also expect to be waiting a long time on the phone before you get to speak to anyone. When I queried the price this time I was told amongst other things that I had key replacement insurance on the policy which went immeadiately saving a few pounds. If companies want this type of business they should be supplying designated phone lines and trained staff to deal with it.

ArtistsRifles
Give our fearless Leader his due! He has been bending various ears to get us good deals.: This is true!!: : However - the founder of the company I used to work for took the view that it was better to get the profit (read render service for HMVF) yourself than pay A.N Other to do it for you. Mind you - he also said you can have it any colour you like as long as it's black..... (Sadly his descendants didn't share the view which is one of many reasons why the parent company in the US is on the slips and I don't work there any more!!)
