everyone out there OK ?? (flooding in uk)

Thanks be that where we live is very unlikely to flood - but I have been thinking the same thing. my hart goes out to everyone affected - i cannot imagine how dreadfull it must be. I also wonder what happens to all the animals in back yard cages - up to farm animals an horses - dreadfull.

I hope everyone at Beltring is OK - when we were there after the sharp storm on Thursday morning the brook between the living history field and support car parking went from being a 4' deep X 6' wide ditch with a muddy bottom to being about 4-6 inches off flooding over.

Things are quite bad in Oxfordshire. I had difficulty getting out of town. As i was driving along the road in front of me just dissapeared and we could see just the roof of three cars poking out of the water.

As i turned around and went a different way i came across this. Not too dramatic, i know, but the river is usually 20 feet below the top of the bridge.

The Astra driver was very optimistic and was lucky to escape with his life.

Several houses near the river had been flooded. One guy has lost three cars. I saw two of them in the river. The third is in his garage which is totally underwater.

The bridge was guarded during the war by the Home Guard. Some of them carved their names into the capping stones on the bridge. Now the side of the bridge has gone altogether. A shame. Everyone in town came out to take a look. It is the highest the river has ever been.

Although one side of the bridge has gone, the other is still there, but water is coming over the top of it and blasting through lots of cracks in the cement. Quite odd to watch.

I am taking the Jeep to an air show today. Not actually sure if i will be able to get there, or if in fact the public will come. It will be a great shame as there has been a lot of work involved and my favourite charity (Oxford Childrens hospital) was looking to benefit.

That Astra driver was BL**DY STUPID !! not only risking his own life, but those of whoever had to try and rescue him/her.

Looking at the pic, I'm guessing the car had been stopped, no bow wave to suggest otherwise........

Having seen floodwater take the side of a house out, in the past, I'm afraid I tend to treat the stuff with a lot more respect,..........certainly in its power, etc.

Hopfully, when the waters have gone down, the capping stones can be found, and be re instated in the re-build. As you so rightly say, Tim (too), a little piece of history. :-)

Hope you can get to the event, today, safely, and its well supported.

All the best,

Andy

The village I live in was cut off from Fri night to late on Saturday. We don't get floods at our end because we are considerably higher than the river. The amount of people that came into the pub on Friday evening who were stuck was amazing. A couple who had come out specially to see the floods had managed to fill their £35,000 BMW with some souvenir water, and another couple left their Ka in the middle of it with water lapping at the door handles.

A bloke on a motorbike asked the best way to Brecon after travelling from Northampton and there were people from Birmingham looking for a way into Wales, some of them with kids in the car. Do these people not watch the news or weather or even use a bit of common sense.

Not a very nice period at all and you have to feel for all those people who's houses are flooded out, I think it will be a long time before things are anywhere near normal for them.

we are into day 3 of having no water with the future looking as bleak, between 7-14 days before we get mains back again. all water bowsers are empty by 9am & all supermarket carparks are having lorries handing out free water ( 6 litres per person/household) each one has a police escort as there have been fights, this has also been running out fast with people litterally running to get in line before they run out

thankfully 150 fireman, raf & navy have managed to save our power staion at present.

sanitation is not at its best, i just spent over 3 hours in a launderette after driving round the country side looking for 1 that wasn't queued out the door, we are eating off disposable plates with plastic cutlery, every single recepticle we can lay our hands on is out in the garden ready to catch any rain water, i have got my camping 12v shower hooked up in the bathroom so at least we are keeping clean at the moment, we are standing in 1 of the big blue ikea bags & then using the shower water to fill the sistern so we can flush the loo. if it wasn't so tragic it is really funny.

working for a parcel company is good in a time like this as other centres are keeping the building supplied with bottles water by sending it with our feeder vehicles, we now have 3 portaloos in the carpark so it is a bit like beltring without the mud.

russ is not at work yet as it is still waist deep in water across the gateway & yard & no one can get in.

thankfully we borrowed 3 x 25ltre water cans from friends at beltring & as they live in bristol we popped down there last night & filled up the ones we emptied.

not a great situation but we are all in the same boat & have to make the most of it.

cheers guys

police called to more fights today over water & i have contacted a local neighbourhood centre to see if they need help watching out for the elderly who can't get out, i have to go see them tomorrow, at least i may be able to make it a little easier for some.

we now have a solution for getting water to flush the loo, russ has dug a 4ft hole up the top of the garden & lined it with hession, as the hole fills up with water we are getting it out & putting it into them big round plastic toy tubs, water not pretty but better than nothing. plus it kept him busy as probably no work this week, water still chest height.

Berni it sounds awful for you, but what a good egg you are checking on others :goodidea:

I must admit we are very lucky here as we live right on sea front and if we do get flooded it just all runs back out to sea so wont hang around for long. Best of luck Bernie and hope it all gets sorted soon

day 6 of no water & we hear they are aiming for tuesday which is good news,

the portaloos at work are starting to smell now but at 550.00 per week for 3 & an extra 320.00 if we want them serviced is an extortionate fee so will have to put up with smell for another couple of days, lots from work are going out the county to hotels for the weekend just to have a flushing loo & a shower,

queues for water are getting longer, i spent over an hour today lining up for bottled water at tescos & then 30 mins at morrisons, at least we have pure drinking stuff.

as the days have gone on many of us have started to get headaches & feel lethargic, this is because we are not drinking & eating enough, nature states if you eat & drink you have to go loo & everyone is trying to avoid that, we are not as bad as some cause our hole up the garden is allowing us to flush the loo about 3/4 times a day.

only 4 more days to go.

Sorry to hear your having such a crap time... I hope it improves soon...

It feels slightly 'otherwordly' in that

A all of this started when I was @ W&P & I missed it (came home to the news)

B We travelled back from W&P & missed it

C We've barely had any rain up here

Seems odd that just a few miles away (relatively)

such devastation & misery is going on...

Not being flippant but are there any

DUKW/amphib owners in the region that could help out?

Down South virtually nothing. Rain but touch wood no floods. Listening to the Radio one farmer has lost over 200 sheep. I can't believe the cost of Porta loos. Trouble is in this country as soon as you volunteer some H&S idiot or bureaucrat starts sucking teeth and goes on about insurance and risk assessments. Surely insurance covers social domestic and pleasure. Whats more SOCIAL, than helping to rescue peoples lives and property? Hell that's DUTY to any honourable person. :argh:
