Hi All,

Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a full list of the Regimental Serial numbers (like the picture) that were painted on the front & rear of WW2 vehicles in existence??

Regards,

Mel

Not really lists but plenty of books out there that explain and list vehicle markings.

These followed a standard pattern (although it may have changed slightly during the war) with numbers representing a position with the force organisation rather than a specific regiment. For example, during the Normandy campaign 50 on a red square was the HQ of the armoured brigade of an armoured division. 60 on a green square was either HQ of the infantry brigade of an armoured division, or the 1st infantry battalion of the 2nd infantry brigade in an infantry division.

I've had a look through Dick Taylor's "Warpaint" Vol. 3 but I can't find a wartime unit using 286.

386 in your first post was allocated to a medium artillery regiment of 2nd Army Troops.

According to Hodges and Taylor (page 108) in the list of GHQ, LoC and Army Troops for 1st Army from 31st December 1942, 286 is listed as 64 LAA Regiment
