fv1609
The old MO spotters have been waiting for this moment for a long time........:yay: Well Bernard you better watch out, you could get too much excitement in one evening as MO 129 is about to appear:-D It is sort of related so you could get a double win, now where is Richard F? Perhaps he's biding his time for the stealth double win:wow:

Rangie
Hmm, central lubrication or a central hydraulic supply. 18 pads or actuators of some sort divided into 9 sectors (one labelled "a"), red-herring possibly, the sectors may be cover plates. Handle or adjuster on the top, in the middle of a strongback. I'm gonna say an access hatch with a hydraulic-operated locking/clamping mechanism?? Alec. :cheesy:
Rangie
Or Leonardo Da Vinci's first attempt at a fusion generator, this was abandoned after he realised the flux capacitor wouldn't be designed by Doc Brown for another 800 years............ Alec. :cheesy: Very well observed Alec Yes there are indeed 18 hydraulic rams that do provide a clamping mechanism. So you are 80% there! So what does it clamp & for what purpose? N.O.S.
Hi Clive, Is it a clamping jig for the making or repair of wooden spoked artillery wheels ? Or even better - a gas heater for expanding and shrinking tyres onto said wheels
fv1609
Hi Clive, Is it a clamping jig for the making or repair of wooden spoked artillery wheels ? Yes very good but what very specific role in the maintenance of such wheels
Richard Farrant
Yes very good but what very specific role in the maintenance of such wheels To ensure that the wheel is true, ie, concentric to the centre, before fitting the steel tyre. fv1609
Or even better - a gas heater for expanding and shrinking tyres onto said wheels  Well done, but no heating required. It is Machine Setting Wheel Tire Mark
Rangie
A jig to clamp the steel band in position before it is welded? Or to true up a band to make sure its the correct size before fitting? I take it the "a" position is the gap between the spokes, "b" the clamping jaw and "c" the eccentric mechanism to operate the jaw? Alec. Damn! Too late......... :-(

I think the major jump forwards was Alec identifying the 18 hydraulic rams. Well done everyone:-D
