draganm
safe to say that beaches are the worst possible place for armored vehicles? Seems like the immersion in salt water, followed by open air, followed my more salt water on a daily basis just eats them up.
mcspool
"I wanna have tanks on the beach!" This Hotchkiss H-35 re-emerged on a French beach about 5 years ago: This is what it may have looked like when "only used on Sundays for a drive to the beach....." johnwardle
Looking at the recent posts of tanks abandoned on beaches, it seems to me that all internal fittings have been removed. There doesn't appear to be a single wire, hose or anything else visible in the hull. I remember seeing an A30 Challenger at the old Isle of Wight military museum, which had been recovered from a beach, all that was left of it was the lower hull. Was it common practice for the army to strip the internals, or were they robbed for scrap?
eddy8men
andrew is certainly setting the standard for valentine resto's. i think the army just took off what they needed and everyone else did the rest Edited May 3, 2016 by eddy8men
draganm
really surprising no ones salvaged the Hotchkiss H-35 yet. Being a Dunkirk veteran ?, gives it very high historical significance, and it even looks like the sand burial left a nice protective crust on the outside. Worth building a desalinization tank for I would think?

When you consider that this is all that's left of the Meteor in the Theddlethorpe Comet, it's probably to be expected that wires, hoses & suchlike don't survive. I suppose a beach is a very hostile environment for any metal object to begin with, let alone one that's also been shot at & bombed :-)
GeePig
Would probably take more than a soaking in diesel or hot oil to unseize those pistons. trevor
mcspool
Have we seen this one on here before? This is proof tanks are buried, and only waiting for someone to locate them, dig them up and restore them! Pzkpfw-e
That's the one that was used as a snowplough at a hospital, then was buried when it was of no further us. (Dug its own grave?:-D)
WCMatt
That came from the grounds of central Islip psychiatric center on long island. It was given to them by the Gov't in the late 1940's after they requested a bulldozer for some construction projects taking place on the grounds. After several years of use, it was buried as a means of "getting it out of the way". I was livimng up in Queens at the time this story took place & I can remember the guys in the long island MV club talking about it. The guy who recovered it, paid the State of New York $10.00 (roughly 8 pounds sterling) but spent several thousand recovering it. this was in the 1970's when that kind of stuff was more readily available and not as expensive as today. Still it is the only M4A3E8 w/M2 mine plow known to exist... Thanks for posting the pic of the recovery. Matt
