  2. What a response, thanks everyone. I was in The Royal Yeomanry from before Fox was introduced. I went on a D + M Instructors course on Fox at Bovvy, hence my interest. Wasn't there a difference in the turrets between Fox and Scimitar, requiring a 'spacer' when Sabre was made? How then, where they able to mount a Scorpion turret on a Fox? Intriguing. Please do post a list of the VRNs of the survivors. I see there is one in a Polish museum, but couldn't see a number on it. I believe Ricardo was it? were involved in trialling a diesel conversion for possible use by the Mexicans? Does anyone know anything about this? Are there any books about CVR(W), or with a chapter or two on them, does anyone know? All these questions, sorry, just one more - any ideas re: the discrepancy in the numbers - VRNs for 347, the British Army only admitting to having 200 ? Thank you everyone who responded.   3. According to these lists, there were 347 CVR(W) Fox registrations. My, limited, research can only find the British Army admitting to ever having 200 In service. I see that a small (?) number were sold abroad - was it Policy to give these vehicles a British ARN, does anyone know? Does anyone know how many Foxes survive? I reckon 20+ I Don't do Facetube, but I understand there is a Fox group on there - I may have to ask a relative to have a look. Regards, 'Chas.'
  4. Not arguing with any of the above, but you MAY find that the Abbot is already registered - a lot of them were, in the 'early years' when they were first disposed of.

  6. Impressed with German wartime Engineering - the front wheels turned after 70 years submerged! I know peat bogwater is very low in oxygen, hence little or no rust, but the hub seals certainly did their job! Call me a sceptic tho, but one of the stills on the second link - ' Tomasz . . . . ' showing the tyre, "Continental, Made in Germany" . . . .would a wartime German tyre have "Made in Germany" written on it in English ? Just wondering :-) 'Chas.'

  8. More of a personal 'I want one' but what about one of those 8 (or 10 is it?) wheeled Russian 'Transporter - Launcher' beasts, with an ICBM on? I'm afraid I don't know the Nato reporting name, there's a Youtube video of one 'Crash loading' on to a transporter that isn't really long enough. I can just imagine the 'impact' of one of those turning up in an arena, charging around for a while then stopping and going into 'launch mode' - Sorry, time for my meds. . . . . . . . . . . :blush: 'Chas.'
  9. Aha! With those Gennies, and that frame on the roof, it looks to me like a 439 Radio Relay. I don't know about the kit inside, mind. I have a 439 (Single Access Switch) Message centre - It has the same two 3kVa gennies on the roof in the 'Armoured box' but it doesn't have that tube frame that yours has. (I think Only the 439 SAS MC has the large (Twice as long) NBC filter box on the right side . Have FUN with your new toy :-) 'Chas.'

  13. Andy, Different generation engine, I know, but a very recent post on here for a CVR(T) strongly suggested blocked idle jet(s)/ ports in the carb. Symptoms are strikingly similar. My 4pfs worth, before a 'grown - up comes along 'Chas.'

Sorry, no idea on fuel tank removal, but my filter had a coating of 'jerry-can lining paint' - I rigged up an airline fitting gradually increased the pressure, and blew the paint off from the inside, Gently rubbing the outside of the filter. Not 100% clean, but 75+% I would say. It worked for me, anyway :-) 'Chas.'

  16. Is that why there are hollebone adaptors with the 'vehicle ends' at an angle to the 'hollebone ends', because the narrower distance between the CVR(T) towing eyes? [by the way, Is the ID of the CVR(T) towing eye 3" or smaller?] 'Chas.'

I am aware this forum is 'watched', and I hope I don't stir things up for anyone, but doesn't the fact that it appears to be 'Pot Luck' what taxation class a vehicle is registered as, just go to show major inconsistencies in the system. From the DVLA link:- "Private/Light Goods Class (PLG)This class mainly covers private cars and light goods vehicles (not over 3,500kg revenue weight) that do not fall under the Graduated VED Schemes. However, any vehicle which does not fall within the other classes, described in this booklet falls within the “PLG” class for duty purposes. Within the PLG tax class, there are 2 vehicle tax bands: Vehicles with an engine size up to and including 1549cc pay a reduced rate, whilst vehicles with an engine size of 1550cc and over pay a standard rate of duty." Neither a Spartan, Nor a Striker is, or ever was, a Goods vehicle, and last time I looked, both were Over 3.5t ! I think what we need is an "Ex - Military Vehicle" registration class, obviously broken down to cover whatever the current cut - off date is for Historic Vehicle status for older vehicles, and VED bands by weight, perhaps? As civilian owned Ex - Millitary Vehicles used on the highway don't generally clock up high mileages, I think any exemption from C + U Regs. enjoyed whilst in Crown service, should continue when in civilian ownership. If our 'Agency friends' prevent registration of vehicles like DROPS and Striker/Stormer (If there are any left!) then values will fall and they will be nearly unsellable. Less 'return' to the MoD - our Lincolnshire friends will buy them for less! Just my 'New Year musings' - Any comments? 'Chas.'

'Leave the thinkin' to 'orses, they 'ave bigger 'eads' - I like that! and "If you are seen to be old and stupid you can basically get away with nearly anything" I try and get away with that, when I can. I got my 'love' of big green stuff when I was in the T.A. Now, nearly 30 years since I left, I have no hankering at all to wear any sort of uniform. Even my 'Coveralls, mens, large' seem to have shrunk over the years and that would be the only 'uniform' I would consider wearing. As has been said, each to their own, but I am happiest in dark blue 'boilersuits' as we used to call them. Practical for climbing into, over and under vehicles, and no pockets, zips and things to catch and rip on all the sharp edges and fittings. Seasons greetings to all on the forum 'Chas.'

Terry, Sorry If I gave the impression I was criticising you. Far from it, the last thing I am is a 'Rivet counter' - Whatever it takes to make it work, that's my motto! I was only trying to point out that you could (probably Would) be looking for something that doesn't exist. The MoD May have gone to the trouble of drawing up racking, cabling etc. only to be overtaken by events (phasing out of Saracen) and it never actually being made/installed. I Know you said you want to run Clansman - Robin is correct, our 439 MC has no radios (Not even fitted with antenna bases) but we run 'Gold fronted' ANR(?) boxes for intercom, no problem.   21. I'm not too sure that Clansman was ever fitted to Saracen. My TA unit started getting Clansman when Saracen was being replaced with Spartan (Sultan and Samaritan) I THINK. (30 ish years ago now :-( ) It should be possible to custom build/adapt something though. Good luck 'Chas.'

  23. Ooh, That takes me back. When I was in the 'Yo-Yos' on Fox, we must have had the vehicles for about a year before we had the screens issued. When we first fitted them, the wiper motors were wired up wrong, and the screen locking handles arced when applied. I seem to remember wrapping them in hessian and jamming them under the radiator air intakes! It must have done wonders for engine cooling. I don't think we bothered with them much, too much hassle. (Rose-tints on - can't have rained much, back in the day!) 'Chas.'
