  1. I like the CVR(T+W) series, I 'served' in them, but has anyone got any pictures of aluminium 'armour' that has been struck by any sort of anti-armour round. I remember seeing a graph of aluminium 'armour' resistance, I suppose you would call it, compared to steel armour, but the bottom scale of the graph wasn't thickness, it was weight! :-) Devious, I remember thinking at the time! Has any CVR(T) been'hit' in anger? RPG in Afghanistan maybe? OPSEC taken into consideration, of course.
  2. Cattle! That's what they look like to me, anyway! :-)
  3. Oh I see. I didn't know that. Thanks. 'Always I am learning!' :-) Chas.
  4. "The thing about the Stalwart that bothered me was that firstly the thing ceased to be amphibious which made the design somewhat pointless but worse still as an none amphibious high mobility load carrier it wasn't replaced by something equal -never mind better- a more modern design especially with better maintanablity should not have been beyond our capablities." Are you saying the 'Stolly' ceased to be amphibious when they stuck a HIAB on the back, or for another reason? Chas.
  5. Tried a Saracen in 3-4" frozen snow once, useless! Front heavy, kept sliding all over the place. Quickly abandoned the idea, took 10mins to gently put her away. This was all on concrete/tarmac, probably different on the 'rough'! (In nice weather, cross country, 'going for it', we always found Saladin ended up in front. Better balanced, engine at the back, gun at the front.:-) Chas.
  6. If I remember rightly, it depends if the old track has been designated a 'Strategic Route' There is one from Frome to Radstock in Somerset, and as has been said above, most of it is a cycleway/footpath. All the bridges are still there, and obviously maintained, the track is still there for some of the way, as if lifting was halted when the status was decided. :-) Chas.
  7. 1975 until we got rid of Ferret in R.Y., as far as I know, they all had C42 and B47, used as previously said. :-) Chas.
  8. Yes, works a lot better, and faster, now, Thank you! Chas. :-)
  9. SORN Surely that was brought in because 'the official mind' saw the number of taxed vehicles was well behind the number of 'Registered' vehicles, and jumped to the conclusion that therefore the difference MUST be being driven/ridden around untaxed. 'Civil Servants' obviously don't have 'Project vehicles', purely off-road vehicles, collections of unused vehicles of any kind. I'n Not saying there aren't untaxed vehicles used on the roads, but I Am saying that there Aren't the numbers 'they' think there are!:-) Chas.
  10. Following on from that, is there a HMRC 'approved' way of flushing ALL traces of red diesel from a system? :-) Chas.
  11. Nice pictures, well done. Thank you! We used to live in a country we could be proud of. (My unit was on 'Stand By for the Falklands) Honestly, 'they' have no idea, do they? Chas.:-)
  12. Logged in, once. Read all I want to of page 1, hit 2 at bottom of screen, get this: "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms." Doesn't like me, this site. Tells me I'm not logged in, when I am. Same for Firefox and Google Chrome, nearly every time. What am I doing wrong, peeps? :-)
  13. This is all 'Vehicle specific'! It all depends on when it was first used: As 'Originally posted: 'Hughes Guides' starts off:- "Brakes . . . . . Braking systems of certain vehicles FIRST USED ON OR AFTER 1st April 1983. . . . . " When I've got the time I will try and trawl through the C + U Regs. and see what rules apply from what date. Quite important to our hobby, I think! Chas.:-)
  14. Thank you, 'people', as ever HMVF has the people with the answers! :-) Chas.
  15. Purely 'academically', does anybody on here know how the braking system works on the Bulldog/fv432Mk 3. I know the steering is by 'Yoke', and totally separate. Just out of interest :-) Chas. Moved from 'Legislation' thread (Think I just got away with not being shot!)
  16. Like quite a few instances in this hobby of ours, we are all trying to apply rules and regulations that weren't intended to apply to our vehicles. Diagonally split braking systems applied to a tracked vehicle? Is it April 1st? Surely 'We' as a hobby, ought to be discussing these 'difficulties' with our elected representatives, maybe not Teresa May, but Phillip Hammond (?) the Transport Minister. Can't we get together and sort out a simple list of 'problem areas' where the legislation simply doesn't 'fit', and suggest the simplest means of making sure we comply with the spirit of the 'law', and keep our hobby SAFE for everybody? Just my 2d's worth. :-) Chas.
  17. safariswing's link to the 'Hughes Guides' starts off:- "Brakes Braking systems of certain vehicles FIRST USED ON OR AFTER 1st April 1983. . " Surely all 430 series vehicles were first used before that. When were the first CVR(T)s around? 197? Just thought I'd point that out. Chas.
  18. Out of interest, what ARE the C + U secondary braking requirements? It has always 'bemused' me that for an ordinary car 'MOT' the handbrake is tested as a secondary braking system, when in a lot of cases, it has been designed solely as a Parking brake. Chas.
  19. I seem to remember in service, that the official part No. for a Fox mirror head, didn't fit a Fox mirror arm. 3/4ton Landrover mirrors fitted, If I remember correctly!
  20. Panic over. Fault traced to a faulty length of cable. It looks as though the beacon comes on with the side and tail lights.
  21. Is there a switch for the beacon somewhere? With out stripping out loads of fittings to trace the cable after it enters the vehicle to the right of the rear door, I have no idea of where it is fed from! The reflector has stopped rotating, so it may be a fuse, but where is that? Has anybody on here got 'the secret'? Thanks, Chas.
  22. I have noticed on this, and other old range AFVs, the welds are showing up against the rest of the 'structures'. Our 439 is showing signs of this, too. Have British AFVs been welded using stainless filler rods, for 70 odd years? I'm intrigued!
  23. How does the Stormer's braking system differ from the rest of the CVR(T) family? 'Not designed for use on public roads' - Total TWONK ! More ignorant 'Government' rubbish. I think it would be found, that one of the design criteria for the CVR(T) family of vehicles, was that it could be used, without any modification, on public roads, in this country, and in mainland Europe. (It is 'Left Hand Drive' isn't it?) 'Grasping at straws, Making it up as they go along' What next, 'The wrong colour'? At least 'the taxpayer' is getting something back, when the Military disposes of vehicles, do 'They' want to stop that income source? As ever, no 'Joined-up thinking' from our so called 'Elders and betters' ! Another Quango that missed 'The Axe' ! Grr. . . .
  24. Halfords Brake Caliper paint. I sprayed some brake calipers with this, and they went rusty before I fitted them. Calipers kept inside, in the dry as well. Ferret interior does look nice, though!
