1. Welding being part of my job has a great deal of interest and in some ways aided the war effort. SMAW and SAW were developed by the Soviets with much of their armour being welded when other countries were still riveting. GTAW and GMAW were developed by the US for fabricating aircraft parts. Lots of different stories around different things. The investigation into the failure of T2 tanker 'Schenectady' to me is interesting as this failed in the harbour and given the nature of the failure mechanism people have assumed many more most likely were lost on the Murmansk run but at the time were though sunk by the enemy A summary of what occurred is here http://www.twi.co.uk/news-events/case-studies/schenectady-t2-tanker-165/ Brittle fracture to I guess most people is a bit odd as normally we would think anything thicker is better or stronger but anything above an inch in a susceptible material can be extremely brittle. For the visual people I have attached a video which shows quite a thick piece snapping like a carrot ps I tried to use the youtube link but kept coming up with an error message is there some trick?
2. What's the armour like to drill, i.e. is it something like bisalloy wear plate with a hardened martensite type surface but not so hard interior? Or back in them days was it just through thickness high hardness? I wonder if through thickness hard as that would be a bugger to tap new threads etc and any structural welding would need a bit of care. I doubt it could be too finicky as it was originally welded up in a fairly rudimentary manner but I wonder if there was many weld failures given it was all new in them days and cold cracking and brittle fracture were unknown back then. reminds me I have a war related video on brittle fracture..........
3. well I guess this could be a sticky..... or just bump it each week so stays relevant

Safety

The scar tissue has gone soggy 3 times now and had to had the area excavated each time, so 6 months later it's still annoying me. On a lighter note typed in Jalopy in the search engine and this video came up. It is quite sobering looking at the car races before seatbelts, crash helmets, roll bars etc etc or before HSE
5. G'day Rick Most likely start in June as my mechanic mate is booked out fixing buzz boxes for MOT's. But the timing is good as I been finalizing parts that are missing from all over the place so hopefully by then all the bits will be enroute or already arrived. He most likely will have moved the toolbox by then also as he said something along the lines that its f''''' heavy. Thanks with the assist on that

18. I have to admit, I like changing passwords. Yes it is annoying but I run my own site for Pinzgauers and you have to be extremely vigilant or they take over peoples accounts and start offering links so you can get a bigger pen15 As the spammers use software to crack in I have to wait until new members complain so that I can let them in. If they don't complain they must be spam. My traffic is small but I would get 20 hits a week from these twits.
19. see if I can link your nice pictures in
