Nigel, It looks like you've discovered the jacking strut. As for changing the filters, I wouldn't even attempt it without taking the top deck off. The hatch underneath Is just not big enough to do anything with, except maybe drain the water (which always seems to find a way into the engine bay) back out. The gearbox filter is even worse, especially in a Sabre where it is mounted on its side, right where you need it to drip oil over your steering discs and ensure you need to change the pads at the same time. I think damaged blades on the fan is no problem, the bearings are the thing which is likely to cause a problem, but are easily replaced. My Sultan had a brand new fan on it, it may seem sad but when I first span it round (no belt on it) I thought it was amazing and had to keep spinning it! Chris

Plenty of stuff gets stolen at Beltring, and it is quite sad that you can't leave your stuff unattended. I've had the light lenses stolen from a vehicle, during the night, in the past... despite the fact that you could go and buy them quite easily in the stalls. I've even heard of wheel nuts going missing! Chris

David, That is an unusual problem. I would have thought it would be a fuel problem, rather than tappets. Do you have a leak somewhere? Ferrets suffer from this when the change over tap has a bad seal in it. It could also be the electronic ignition module overheating. If you are confident it's neither of these then if it were me I'd check the spare over, then swap them. You can swap a J60 in a couple of hours, probably quicker than you can identify and recitfy the problem with the other engine. Chris

Adam, I have used letters from the Tank Museum to do the Ferret and Fox. The Land Rovers were done with letters from Land Rover and the CVR(T)s were done with the MoD cast vehicle forms. If you haven't got anything suitable, then a letter from the MVT vehicle verification officer will do. Chris

David, Doing the tappets on the J60 involves removing both cam shafts. Are you sure you need to do this job? I think it would be easier to swap the engine for your spare than do this job while the engine is in the vehicle.
