  1. they are very similar, Bedford 28hp started off with Chevrolet derived engines in the early days but then developed them themselves and improved the engine is some ways. some differences are the capacity Bedford is 214 cubic inches where as the Chevrolet is 216. the Bedford has full pressure oil system the Chevrolet has "dippers" on the big end bearings. Crank shaft Bearings in the Chevrolet are babbit type bearings and need to be shimmed to the correct clearance, Bedford uses different sized standardized white metal bearing. i think the Chevrolet has a rear main oil seal (rope) the Bedford does not from memory? oil line to cylinder head passes through the water jacket on the Chevrolet, it goes directly to the head on the Bedford The side panel covering the push roads etc on the Bedford engine only goes up the base of cylinder head, the Chevrolet it goes to the top of the head and shrouds the spark plugs. different water pump, thermostat etc. there are no doubt many more differences, many people prefer the bedford engine due to its superior oiling system and being easier to rebuild. The Bedford 28hp was developed further after the war and was called the 214, they got a lot more hp out of the essentially the same block. Hope that helps
  2. stick a land rover engine and box in, nobody will notice! ;-)
  3. i put speedways from John Gray on my GTB, done several thousand miles, no complaints.
  4. I think I will check with them in the week, the insurance certificates clearly state country of origin as the USA so I would hope that makes it clear but will check anyway to be safe.
  5. interesting, i've not long renewed my insurance with footman james, i have got 2 x 1/2 ton dodges and the GTB on my policy along with a few others. The renewal price was very good and i have never had any trouble in the past with adding vehicles, no matter how strange they are.
  6. I have the jolley set up in my Bedford, no complaints at all works very well. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  7. Yes they are, the bonnet and sides are different though. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  8. Finally got a badge for the OXC :-) And a very nice copy of the parts manual. Very happy.
  9. Hi Paul, The vicar of Southwick is looking for some vehicles over the D-Day weekend, they are planning a do at southwick house (HQ for monty and Eisenhower on D-Day), they usually open up the "map room" and the officer mess ;-) maybe you could tie in a drive over that way? unfortunately i will be in Normandy so cant be there.
  10. not a great deal of choice on the 10.50x16 I'm afraid, Either the MITAS http://www.mitas.eu/index.php?stranka=300&scid=20&pid=33 that you can get from your local industrial tyre place. or Jaap Rietveld did have some track grip style tyres that were made by Specialty tires of America if i remember correctly but they were quite a price from what i recall, may be worth a call to Jaap. El alemain colelction had some NOS tires a while ago, but they are probably gone by now.
  11. Since posting the original thread i have registered several vehicles, some the same situation as the Bedford some i bought in from France/Belgium. I complete the Nova online and usually get the clearance within a few days without any trouble. No VAT has been requested to date but all the vehicles have been 1940/50's.
  12. Yes, Rory has come up with some bits for me already but the water pump and carb are proving tricky, particularly the carb as I'm looking for the side draught not up draught. Thanks Ron Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  13. Looking for a complete water pump for a Morris c8 any condition as mine is completely missing. Also looking for a solex 40 side draught carb as fitted to some Morris vehicles, again any condition. Thanks Barry Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  14. We're taking an MW to Normandy, would be happy to meet up somewhere. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  15. i had a similar problem on a Chevy 8cwt (almost the same clutch etc) that turned out to be the recon clutch plate was too thick, only a by a couple of mm is i remember correctly, be worth checking the thickness of the plate.
  16. Hi John When i restored my GTB i needed a load of caged nuts for the cab panels but could not find suitable cages anywhere, in the i made them myself with a simple tool in the fly press, i had the blanks laser cut by a local firm and got the correct square nuts from the Fastenal in the USA.
  17. Hi Ron I use these guys, they have not let me down yet. http://www.cptenterprises.co.uk/

  19. i fitted an Alternator to my OXC, simple cheap and reliable, ideal for charging our leisure batteries as well . ok so its not original but once the bonnet is on who knows:cool2:.
  20. Like it, thanks for sharing. There seems to be a few GTB's with various US fire departments.
  21. from what i could make out when on one of the many calls with VAT, vehicles over a certain age (possibly pre 73) are exempt from VAT if coming from within the EU, if its come from outside the EU you don't need to do a NOVA, providing you have the import paperwork. but of course you didn't pay very much for the vehicle anyway, did you;).
  22. I have used both methods, the online service is quicker as long as you have access to it . To get paper copy just call the National VAT helpline and request a NOVA 1 form. i used the paper version for my Bedford and included a covering letter explaining the circumstances.
  23. the process was not too bad in the end, two of the vehicles i have just done were imported from france a couple of years ago but it did not cause any problems, they seem to be processing the NOVA's in about 10 days at the moment.
