Runflat Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Ever fancied travelling the world, taking in DUKW tours along the way but not sure where they are? Here’s a list to start you off. Are there any others out there? AUSTRALIA • RainForeStation Nature Park (Cairns): http://www.rainforest.com.au/index.htm EIRE • Viking Splash (Dublin): http://www.vikingsplash.ie/ GREAT BRITAIN • London Duck Tours (London): http://www.londonducktours.co.uk/default.asp • The Yellow Duck Marine (Liverpool): http://www.theyellowduckmarine.co.uk/ • Searles Sea Tours (Hunstanton): http://www.seatours.co.uk/ USA • Boston Duck Tours: http://www.bostonducktours.com/ • Ride the Ducks (Baltimore, Branson, Newport, Philadelphia, Stone Mountain Park, Seattle, San Francisco): http://www.ridetheducks.com/ • Just Ducky Tours (Pittsburgh): http://www.justduckytours.com/ • Bay Quackers (San Francisco): http://www.bayquackers.com/ • DC Ducks (Washington): http://www.dcducks.com/index.htm • Wisconsin Duck Tours: http://www.wisconsinducktours.com/ • Hawaii Duck Tours (Honolulu): http://www.hawaiiducktours.com/ • Hot Springs National Parks Duck Tours (Arkansas): http://www.rideaduck.com/ducks/index.php ...and, no! The two in San Francisco are not the same: http://www.sfweekly.com/2008-11-12/news/clash-of-the-quackers/ As well as the above list, I think there used to be “Metro Ducks” in Chicago, Illinois; and Dayton, Ohio. But I can’t find any track of them now. Remember, before you book your flights, do check that the tours are actually operating; and satisfy yourself on how safe the vessels are before boarding: http://www.ntsb.gov/events/symp_vessels/Documents/Miss%20Majestic_MAR0201-NTSB.pdf http://www.uscg.mil/hq/cg5/docs/boards/dukw.pdf Quote
Lauren Child Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 (edited) The Hunstanton one also have a LARC. It's a good tour out along the coast (in the LARC) or out to see seals (in the DUKW). It's just along the coast from the Muckleburgh collection ( http://www.muckleburgh.co.uk/ ). As the tour takes in the local wildlife its good for pacifying the understanding significant other after being dragged around yet another military museum ) The Hunstanton tour hadnt started for the season the last time I went there, but here are some photos to whet the appetite They also do cuddly toy versions of the DUKW and LARC. Lauren Child Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 (edited) Are there any others out there? There's also one in Eastbourne, but it's only used to ferry people out to more conventional pleasure boats, that then go out to Beach Head etc. The DUKW is used when the tide is out and the craft can't get to the jetty. http://www.simplonpc.co.uk/AllchornDUKW.html#anchor499237 Edited March 22, 2009 by Lauren Child Quote
Grasshopper Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 My wife got me a voucher for Duck tours in London as a birthday present. Now it's less cold, I might have to use it soon. Quote
nz2 Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 In New Zealand I know of one tour at Rotorua. http://www.rotoruaducktours.co.nz/Rotorua_Duck_Tours_Ltd/DUKW_History_IDL=1_IDT=2099_ID=12422_.html Doug Quote
Runflat Posted June 3, 2009 Author Posted June 3, 2009 I came across an old article today (10 years old) saying there was a DUKW tour company at Middelkerke in Belgium. Does it still exist? Can anyone provide a link? Quote
Great War truck Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 I have seen the DUKWs in Chicago. They were painted pink. I was a little stunned as i saw one reflected in a shop window i was looking in. Quote
Jon8910 Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Whatever happened to the DUKWs that operated the ferry service from St Helier across to Elizabeth Castle, Jersey? Quote
poppypiesdad Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 There was one in Glasgow that went in the Clyde at Govan not seen anything about it for a bit anyone know ? Quote
Runflat Posted November 18, 2009 Author Posted November 18, 2009 (edited) I've found an old reference to Amphi-Bus Tours of Montreal operating DUKWs (W&T #67). Sadly no more by the looks of things - they've gone modern. :-( http://www.montreal-amphibus-tour.com/index.html Edited November 18, 2009 by Runflat Quote
ford 369 Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Whatever happened to the DUKWs that operated the ferry service from St Helier across to Elizabeth Castle, Jersey? that would be the Jersey puddle ducks except as far as I know they have not been dukws for a long time if ever but specially built vehicles based I believe on London buses Nigel Quote
Tony B Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 The DUKWS in Jersey retired some time in the late 1970's. The Puddleducks were purpose built in Germany, though what the componets are I don't know. They to have now retired and I belive been sold due to the company losing the contract. Quote
ford 369 Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 I seem to remember seeing something running back and forth from the castle when I was in Jersey in may but could be wrong, however I am going over again next week so will check, Nigel Quote
Gordon_M Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 I was there when they launched the Glasgow one, and did the TV interview as the DUKW person hereabouts. I believe it was run by the same company as does the Irish DUKW stuff, but I think it folded after a couple of years due to lack of demand, or not enough profit, or whatever. They wanted to drive further upstream from the city centre and sail down to it, faster and more fuel efficient, but I believe they got sited at Renfrew which isn't ideal for a tour. There were plans for a modern DUKW type vehicle tour through the Falkirk wheel too, but apparently the modern amphibs were tested and found wanting, so you are stuck with touring through it on a boat. jerry.ice Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 Took the family on the Liverpool Dukw tour a couple of years ago. Did the splash down into The Albert Dock for the tour then they lost power too the propella, we bobbed along for half an hour while the second Dukw was launched to tow us back to the ramp. There was a tricky bit where the first duck was starting to tow us up the ramp until our wheels hit the slip way. Shame they don`t do that every trip as it made for a far more interesting time. Quote
rambo1969 Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 Ask me about london duck tours when you see me, never get me on one off them....... Quote
Kuno Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 NAVIGATE THE DELLS ON A DUCK Duck tours are one of Wisconsin’s most-loved attractions. Original Wisconsin Ducks has been navigating the land and water here for more than 57 years. With 90 vehicles, we are the largest fleet of tour ducks in the nation. Our top-notch Duck drivers serve up a novel tour mix including a bit of Wisconsin geology, a dash of world history and, of course, a hefty helping of good, old-fashioned Midwest humor. 90! Quote
