Danny152
Hello all, I have a very straight and easy to read data plate for one of my vehicles, however it is fairly scratched and was wondering if there is anyone with the skills to possible hide and damper down these scratches? I know aluminium you can clean but think the scratches are a little deep. Any takers or advice? I have tried all other techniques myself so need a expert to help? Would like to try this before I have to get a new one made. Thanks Danny
Richard Farrant
Danny, Try these people, http://www.vintagebrassplates.co.uk/ I have not used them but going by their website it looks the sort of thing they would do.
fv1609
I've bought brass plates from them. Not cheap but high quality & good co-operation in getting what I needed.

Danny152
Thanks all, I have tried Chris at that web address and he was very helpful. I have ordered a few things him off the past but he does not restore plates just makes repros. The plate I don t think is that bad to warrant a repro but would just like to clean it up a little and remove some of the scratches. Thanks all for your help. Regards, Danny
Ron
I can't think how you would remove the scratches without sanding them down or in extreme cases welding them up before sanding. Either way of course you are bound to loose some detail or information off the plate. Personally I'd rather have a scratched original than a repro. Sean N
I suspect also that cleaning up a heavily scratched original plate, were it possible, would be more time consuming and therefore expensive than printing a new one, which is probably why it's not done. Danny152
Yep that is a fair one gents, worst case I will get a repro one and keep the original one in the vehicle file pack. Thanks again for your help. Regards Danny

MatchFuzee
Have looked at filling the scratches? This is one product that I found (but I haven't used it) when I searched "fill scratches in aluminium". http://www.innotecworld.com/products/sealants-glues.php?productid=
baxterwood
You could try this guy, Robert, in the Netherlands he does restore plates but also supplies repro examples too and they are perfect - have a look at his website he is very helpful. https://rdrnl.home.xs4all.nl/4UPagePlateRestoring.html
