Rubberduck Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Not sure if this is military or not but I've got a land rover series fuel tank with a heater built in the side from new. I was told that it was so the land rover was always ready to go in the event of an emergency and there ain't to many around now. Is this true and which role would it of been used in? Thanks for the info. Quote
retriever Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 just a guess but i would say to stop diesel from waxing in the cold Quote
Austin Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 Did the military use diesel series Landys? Quote

Thanks for the info. Bloodhound missile sites probably earliest, certain weapons storage sites, IIRC the last S3 Diesel 88" MOD contract (Tri-service "KD" )was only nominal RAF - they were manned by USA in UK , hence the 7.50 tyres as standard. The RN also had some diesel. Show a photograph of the tank - it may be possible to date it.. Quote
Rubberduck Posted September 16, 2015 Author Posted September 16, 2015 Heater element in the side of the fuel tank. Quote
Rubberduck Posted September 16, 2015 Author Posted September 16, 2015 Overall picture of the fuel tank. Quote
ruxy Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 Can't quite see the edges , up to abt. 1979 they were "tern" (tin coated steel - same as Rolls Royce) & seam folded , however the top seam was a wide solder run and often cracked. Later tanks were gas welded at edge seams. btw , certain these heaters are not in the Optional parts catalogue. Quote
Rubberduck Posted September 16, 2015 Author Posted September 16, 2015 Some close ups of the seams and edges. It's been tinned over as it's like my ferret fuel tank. Quote
Gordon_M Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 Ambulance or airport crash truck maybe? anything that needed to be ready to go, and had to go first turn of the key. Quote
Richard Farrant Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 The words ambulance and crash truck do not go hand in hand with a 2 1/4 litre Land Rover diesel ...... not the vehicle for a fast getaway. I reckon it is for cold climate. Also note it has no filler cap, so is a side filler, some military Land Rovers were side fillers, but mostly CL as I recall. Are we sure this tank is "military"? Quote
Rubberduck Posted September 16, 2015 Author Posted September 16, 2015 Not sure if it's is military. All I got told was to put it in the back of the shed for a rainy day. Got it in a mixed bunch of military series bits and pieces. Did civi stuff used to get tinned when made or was it just military stuff? Quote
MatchFuzee Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Someone at The Dunsfold Collection should be able to help:- http://www.dunsfoldcollection.co.uk/ Quote
Rubberduck Posted September 23, 2015 Author Posted September 23, 2015 interest thread Sorry I don't get what you mean. I've contacted the Duxford collection but so far no reply. Quote
Degsy Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 I think he means it's an interesting thread Quote
.303fan Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 Military tanks got the caps straight on them. This is tank in the picture is a civilian type. Quote
ruxy Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 Military tanks got the caps straight on them. This is tank in the picture is a civilian type. Unless a "CL" Quote
Rubberduck Posted September 24, 2015 Author Posted September 24, 2015 Unless a "CL" Sorry don't know what you mean, CL? Quote
ruxy Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 "Commercial Logistics" more or less civvy with a few bolt-ons , such as NATO towing pack , HD suspension & shocks , bonnet spare-wheel mtg. http://www.emlra.org/index.php/articles/land-rovers-gs-cl-ffr Quote
.303fan Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 It looks like the CS ones had rear tanks. The tank in the picture might been a mod for cold climates to constant heat the derv as it made a more easy start? If it helps on keeping easy start from under the bonnet then i want one too! Quote
ruxy Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 Plenty of Ex-MOD S3 88" CL have side-fill tanks , same with Ex-MOD S2 88" (as opposed to S2A 88") Quote
ruxy Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 btw. Don't assume diesel , don't therefore assume a tank heater (but wtf could it be). Look at the photograph , only one elbow (suction) , no elbow for spill return . The same tank is in fact the factory approved "aux" tank for a Defender.. Quote
.303fan Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 The return pipe hole is plated, but it can be a re puposed tank. I have a diesel tank ready to go in a petrol vehicle, i just made the plate. Quote
