Guys,

Chances such as that come few and far between such that when they do you have to say things like, "what the hell can I sell to get there"!!

Good old eBay is all I can say! But 32 Wright Cyclones singing in harmony were fantastic!

I'll knock up a bit of narrative just to rub it in......can't decide what was best to fly in, the B17 or the B24............!

Yawns and rolls over!

What older brother failed to mention was that it was MY EFFORT in selling his reproduction Eastman B3 Sheepskin flying jacket at Beltring in 2005 for £350 that was the difference between him having raised enough money to book the weekend trip to Michigan in the first place! - Oh how these seemingly immaterial facts are overlooked after the dust has settled - And I didn't even charge him my usual commission!!!

Joking apart, on that August Sunday afternoon that he was in the USA, I was driving my Dodge WC-56 Command Car around the arena at a village fete type event near Stowmarket when my mobile rang. I pulled the Dodge to a halt and answered the withheld number call. "Listen to this" he said and all I could hear was a terrific rumbling noise. He was in the nose of the B-17 with all four fans turning and I was posing around at a bloody village fete!!

My only satisfaction came from the fact that I had done exactly the same in the USA seven years previous aboard the Collins Foundations B-17 Nine-O-Nine and I was allowed on the flight deck for take off and landing, whereas Neil was merely strapped in at the waist! Then I got the text the following day to tell me that they had also decided to go up for a hop in the B-24 Liberator.........Oh well, you can't win them all!

Maybe I should post my pictures of my surprised flight in the back seat of Maurice Hammond's superb P-51 Mustang, Janie?

2 - 2 !

Now when is that blooming B-29 Superfortress FiFi of the Confederate Air Force going to be back in the Texas skies??

Amazing photos - thanks for posting them.

So good to see some B17s in natural metal - remember when Sally B used to look like that?

Nice pic if the B24 too, I remember seeing Diamond Lil a few years back when she came over for the "Return to Britain" stuff (1992?)

Yes 1992 when the Confederate Air Force flew B-24 Diamond Lil over to England to participate in the 50th Anniversary Return to England of the USAAF.

That was 15 years ago now, and this summer we are celebrating the 65th Anniversary by staging the OPERATION BOLERO - Tour of the Dromes event, located in Frmalingham, Suffolk, East Anglia.

Incidentally, I saw Diamond Lil perform at the Boscombe Down air show in 1992 and had a tour of the aircraft - Even bought a bright red B-24 Baseball Cap which has long since disappeared!

Back in the States, they are now in the process of re-configuring the aircraft back into the guise of a B-24 D, I think, by refitting the ball turret and making other modifications.

Will be interested to see what she looks like when she comes out of the work-shop.
