My NFU Mutual Vintage Commercial Vehicle policy covers me for SD&P, including attending vintage vehicle club events, rallies and road runs.

Up to £5,000,000 plus costs for legal liability for property damage.

Unlimited cover for legal liability to the public for injury

This is all written in the key facts sheet, I would think that it would be sufficient, unless someone can see a get out in there.

I did specifically ask about this before taking out the policy, always best to check first.

With the clubs you are covered on their PLI only at their Official club run events..

Your'e right, it's a bit confusing, are you talking about personal cover without an MV exhibit?

I would have thought most classic car/military vehicle policies included show cover for you whilst driving you MV as this is what most owners do with their vehicles.

Have a close look at the conditions of your policy, it may be that you will find you are covered, it is not unheard of that the person who answers the phone does not know much at all, or is even interested!

Even if you just had an ordinary third party cover only, I'm pretty sure you would have the necessary public liability to drive onto a show ground and park on display, after all that's no different from parking in the car park, arena displays might be another matter though.

Interesting and important stuff this, do show organizers actually know what is needed or do they just put that clause into the form to cover themselves?

Hi

My policy from Footman James states on the certificate;

"Limitations As To Use

Use for social, domestic and pleasure purposes and in connection with rallies, working demonstrations and exhibitions. The policy does not cover for hiring, racing, compititions, trials or speed testing."

I would have thought this would be standard on "specialist" insurance.

If not included I am sure a call and at most an admin. charge to have it altered.

I have recently filled in the exhibitor form for the BA Working weekend in Aberdeenshire and they require this cover for all exhibitors, I am sure this is standard now.

I suspect the need for this started with stationary engines and such, that arrive on trailers and do not need insurance normally. I would have thought that anything with insurance to be driven on the road would have sufficient cover. Probably best to check though.

I would imagine for organisers to fully cover themselves against all eventualities would be very expensive, and the way things are these days there is the threat of being sued.

The same for us, if for example someone is cut on a sharp part of your vehicle or bumps their shin climbing on it they can get a lawyer to sue you. "no win no fee". It happens! Damm "elf and safety" police!!

adrian are now going to send me a email conforming i have cover at rallies / shows etc, HOWEVER the scenario of little lad tripping and hitting head on my ferret for example is still a public liability issue which as far as they are concerned is arranged at a club level fine if u belong to mvt and go to a mvt event. probably won,t use adrian flux next year!!!

  • 3 weeks later...

MOST historic vehicle policies cover you for show ground type off road cover, inc driving it into the show area, where it gets 'interesting', is what is and isn't covered, for example,........guns, when I looked into this a while ago, I was told that if they were an attached part of the vehicle,....and included in this heading was the 30/50 cal on mounts for gmc/reo, etc these were covered, as part of said insurance,...........but rifles in rifle racks, etc are not.

Mostly, PLI is taken out to cover NON vehicle mounted items,.............sandbagged gun pit/barbed wire/ kit on display, type stuff, and most PLI is third party cover, meaning if little so and so falls into display and gardians decide to sue, you've got cover...........providing you've read small print in policy and put up your 'there items may have sharp edges, and should not be handled without the owners consent', type notices.

There are different companys out there providing PLI, shooters rights, being one of them.

I was talking to the organiser of a fairly large Classic Car show earlier this year and he wanted to know about my insurance. The reason, I discovered, was that the previous year the Authorities discovered 5 vehicles attending the show without any insurance at all, and these had all been driven there on the road. I told him I was insured with Footman James, and he was happy - he also said that all the Military vehicles attending his show were also insured with Footman James.

Hi, just opened post. pass for upcoming event. 'Please be ready on arrival to produce any safety certificates you require i.e. MOT plus suitable insurance certificate'.

Where is it going to end?

Andy.

As a show organiser I can say that is correct, if you don't want to or can't produce the relevant documnets that the orgasnisers may request at any time then don't be suprised if they refuse you entry.. rules are there for a reason.

Two vehicle owners were banned from this years Bunker Bash for not complying with our admin requests, where nessasary we will take steps to protect ourselves.

If you have the correct documents I can't see what the problem is in producing them??
