Bedford TM 4x4 crane & winch fitted.

walt

Question

Hi , I'm a new member & was wondering if anybody out there could help me with a couple of questions.

have recently purchased a couple of new toys - eager beaver forklift & Bedford TM -which will be leaving for Australia soon.

Re Bedford TM 4x4 crane & winch fitted - its an ex RAF truck from Akrotiri (?) unit ID F7828A.

I realize that it is quite unusual to be both winch & crane fitted, does anybody know what purpose the vehicle was used for ? It's only covered 12,000Km's, so hasn't seen much use.

Being an ex R.A.F truck, does anyone know which department to contact to find out some history for the vehicle?

Does anyone know of dealers in the UK who specailize in spare parts for the Bedford TM's -apart from Whithams & Jacksons? Also where to obtain user handbook,, workshop manuals, parts catalogues etc...

Any info regarding Bedford TM's would be greatly appreciated.

many thanks,

Walt.:nut:

I can help with my bold, if you google RAF Akrotiri all will be revealed. It will probably have been used as a workshop repair type but they do have other uses, the winch is primarily a self recovery winch but could be used to recover other stranded vehicles. What's the military registration? I may be able to help, there is a huge amount of vehicles and equipment being sent back to UK from Cyprus and is no doubt heading for Withams etc.

For s/h parts a very good source is Crouch Recovery - their details are on milweb. Some new parts are still available - google Bedford Genuine Parts. They organise the production of parts and supply to approved parts distributors, and are very helpful. They or Crouch might be able to help with a manual too.

Don't forget to post a pic of the TM when you've fitted the Roo Bar :-D:-D

Hi Walt,

There was a Bedford TM 4x4 with crane, for sale not so long ago near Sydney, I know the owner. This one that you have bought is rather odd, having worked for the army and one of my tasks was to repair and test cranes and winches, I never came across a TM 8 tonne with both crane and winch, usually one or the other. Saying that, the RAF had a few variations of vehicles from the Army. Is the winch a mid mounted Turner, driven off the transfer box?

Hi guys,

thanks for all your info. Not sure if I'm responding to threads in the right way, if not, apologies -this is a combination of both answers & more questions.........

1 - Mill reg no. 50 KG 83

2 - re crouch recovery - I looked up their website, haven't spoken to them yet, but will do shortly. they certainly look like they have some interesting kit !?

3 - Green machine- looks like they have all manuals, servicing schedules etc for both TM & EB , so thats great.

4 - Yes TM has mid mounted P.T.O. ( turner ? winch) + atlas crane.

5 - I'll give TM full service once it arrives . Are there any areas that I should pay particular attention to given that it will be used in remote locations? Suggestions of spare parts apart from the obvious -hoses, water pumps, starter motor ,additional spare tire,-would be appreciated.

6 - as vehicle will be operated in all types of terrain, from sandy deserts to tropical rainforests & even snow, no doubt the winch will get a very good workout, are there any hints on use of winch for self recovery/general winching ?

7 - are there any common faults/problems with TM's that I should be aware of?

8- Any general info/pictures on Bedford TM in use would be great, in particular winching, but anything would be appreciated

I realise TM is 23 yrs old, although it will have to work very hard for a living, it will be maintained to a very high standard & much loved!! I will post pictures when it arrives approx 6-8 weeks. can't wait!!!

Thanks again for all your assistance/info -I'm sure I'll be asking lots more questions as time goes by......

Cheers

My fella used to be based at RAF Buchan on 1 of the mobile radar convoys and there were 2 TM's with both winch and crane. 1 asigned to each of the convoys. Later replaced by horrible Renaults with the same fittings. Think that they are getting sold off by Withams as well now!

Hamptons of Keele Staffordshire are a very good source for any TM parts, they always have at least 20 in stock with a number broken for spares regularly. PM me if you want their details, I call in there regularly so if there is anything you want me to look out for let me know.
