  1. With the water round here (London) Bl**dy shraprnel is more likley! I always use the Army Reipe' 'Use rain water in cooling system'. Or pile the defrosting results of frezer and fridge in a plastic bucket. Sour subject just at moment, so far I've spent two days dismantaling interior of Volvo due to heater leack! Lossing the will to live! :nut:
  2. I'm not even going to try and explain it! :-D There was a case of an Essex traffic copper trying to explain how a Pakistani Pantectechnicon had plunged into a pond, but that never got translated as we were rolling around the floor. Another classic that comes to mind is a salutary lesson on letting blondes near radios. When asked (Because she was out of sight!) over a two way radio 'Where are you now?' The reply, so innocent was 'I'm over here!'.
  3. Part of the problem is litigation culture. The manufacturers don't HAVE a selection of old engines, so don't bother to test on them. As they haven't tested to cover a** they put on 'Not suitable'.
  4. Oh I sooo agree! There was one parked outside a house at Mottingham for years, never found out who owned it or if it was sale (Stupid *** that I am):-(
  5. Steve, a lot of workers in German factories were forced labour, of all nationalties, political views and religions. There are a lot of credible stories of handfuls of sand or swarf stuck in with grease, Plaster or paper soacked in acid painted onto U Boat hulls. It was a dangerous occupation, if caught the results were fatal, often by nasty methods. But hey , what was there to loose? At least it gave what passed for life a purpose. Jersey airport, at the time considered one of the best equipped in the world, was only considered suitable for Light Aircraft by the German's. A local contractor was employed to mow the grass on the runways. The figure quoted is that the gras had to be 4 inches high. The mowere was set by a German officer at the start of the job. The operator then lowered the cutter, at te end he raised the cutter, this was checked by the officer at the end of the job. It was only post war that this came to light.
  6. Getting rarer! Lovely vehicles. Is it true the body was originally a taxi body?
  7. Shipping space was one, as for ambulances that's why the WC54 was discontinued and the KD 64 came in. If I can find them there are pictures of WC51s double stacked on a pallett for shipping, also on tiny tyres as rubber was short. The other thing is a roof needs a lot of metal and construction time. Both of which can be better spent on other things. Low shillouete is also important and with an open back you can get more in! It also gives troops all round vision.
  8. Do you pressure bleed? On a vehicle that long iy does make life a lot easier.
  9. Congratulations on having the nerve to take such a project on! Lok forward to seing it in the meatl!:goodidea:
  10. I've done quite a few with ordinary black roof paint. Cheaper than all the specioal Chassis paint, and works just as well.
  11. Well we only have to worry till October 5th now! :-D As the old saying goes ***** hell. I hope so, 'cause I don't think I'll make Heaven!
  12. Last time going to Normandy, customs were quite happy with copies, clearly marked COPY. Though to stress again it is the PROOF MARKS are the legal requirment. All the certificates in the world don't mean nothing if you ain't got the marks on the gun.
  13. MOD went over to an semi matt paint as it is easier to wash for decontamination .
  14. Altrrnatly! You can get small quiet 500 to 750 watt generators cheap enough now. Some, like mine have a 12 volt tap, ideal for feild charging. Or get a chore Horse charging set. In keeping and resonably priced.
  15. Do as some of the train boys do. We have two original bolts and a gauge, so its a rebuild not a replica! If it built to as near the original speca as possible I can see no problem. Most MV's over about ten years old have been rebuilt over their lives.
  16. Hapy Birthday Richard, and many more.
  17. We used to run an old tonka tipper on any old cooking oil, sometimes with other waste oil, at the stables. A dash of parrafin or white spirt to help the flow. Winter starting was heat with a blow lamp. Them were the days!
  18. To convert a T214 to run on gas should be easy. After all they wer ebuilt to run on nearly anything. Thing is the cost of conversion. You'd have to do a hel of a lot of milage to make it worth while. I have bene thinking, you can make Ethanol from biomass, lets all pool the lawn mowings! :-D
  19. Yes I've used those, but I've a couple of battries that have been stnding about and gone flat. I'd like to get some of them back.
  20. Then how come it has jsut gone back to 18 year olds being able to drive LGV and PCV? Left hand not knowing what right is doing?
  21. I can get about fifteen to the mile out of the Dodge, fully loaded on a run at about 40/45 mph. Mind you on a 64 year old vehicle you don't want much faster.Thats a lot more than a 101 ambulance, and close to a petrol series Land Rover.
  22. Didn't think weight applied on pre 1960 vehicles ?
  23. On BBC2 http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00wllmb/Operation_Mincemeat/ This does tell what may be called the official version. Intresting archive clips of vehicles in it as well. No mention of HMS Dasher.
