  1. THe wife came back from a trip down to the shops on Saturday and said. "What was the aeroplane?" So stupidly I said "whad did it look like" "It was silver" OK what else "It had a picnic table on it, You know the one we have seen it at airshows" So I ask how big it was. "Bigger than a Spitfire and smaller than a Lancaster" It can't be a Catalina because that is white and it was smaller than that. "Oh yes it was noisy and travel quite low and fast" They are all low around our area as if they go high they get a bit confused with the planes stacking over Bovingdon or heading for Luton. Even more stupidly I said draw a picture. So what I get when turned 90 degrees looked like a cigar on a surf board. Fat lot of good that was. Can you guess what it was? After an hour of trawling through photos she actually found what it was, but I am going to make you lot suffer to see what you think it could have been. Also as an "expert" what is the worst description you have been given in order to ID something? Mike
  2. Good point, I rember see afew of them not long ago also. You probably get away with it if you are not parked up on a housing estate or displaying a tax disc. Mike
  3. Not an expert here but I do watch the odd TV program. Would appear that if the ANPR cannot read or recognize a number plate it will alert the operator, as it does for fake plate, who then has to make a decision. You will probably find yourself stopped, clamped, fined, sent to the crusher or a combination. Mike
  4. They said he is not banned from attending W&P but they have not said if that is on foot though. Mike
  5. The white van with the cameras on each cornet is full of wheel clamps. When they find an untaxed vehicle parked up they clamp it and stick a big notice on the windscreen. Or at least they do around here. Mike
  6. Blimey how do they drive a van? They drove one down our road on new years day. Mike
  7. Been looking through the list and there ar a few intersting ioones in there, although most are "run of the mill". Mind you if it averaged out at £5 a camera. It comes to a tidy sum. The one that stands out is the US Navy Aircraft Torpedo Camera you must tell us more about that one. Oh yes the Halina Super mini 110 was my first camera. Mike
  8. Now that is a good question. Film cameras are making a bit of a come back in certain circles. Some people swear by them, especially the larger format. Was in Canada back in February and came across a chap using a large format plate camera from the 1920's, not only did it still work it was also very impressive in wood and brass fittings, matching tripod, black cape/hood. Back on topic You may struggle to get rid of 300 as a job lot. Would like a nice collection myself but that would mean more space, and the wife may not be too pleased. Do you have a list of what you have got. Mike
  9. Some task you have there, good luck. WRT to engine/gearbox issue, is it possibly the good old iron block/alloy box ad water (plus salt) lets react and bond ourselves together scenario? Is there a plugged drain in the bottom of the bellhousing? This is often don with offroaders that do regular and long term wading, clutches don't seem to work to well when lubricated with water. THey also seal all joints etc with silicone. They may have done this and used something other than silicone, bearing in mind its age. We used to use builders mastic on VW Beetles floor pans ro heat exchanges/cill. Worked a treat and waqs cheaper than the proper seal. Mike
  10. Only if they have nicked them to top up their coffers. Most manhole covers in the roads are the property of the sewage undertaker and not the council. The council are responsible for gully grates though. They also nick road signs as these are normally aluminium. Mike
  11. Welcome in. Also like to know how it got over there. The wife also has a question. Are you one of those Alaskan State Troopers that have there own programme on one of the cable channels? MIke
  12. Rats. Just spent the last day looking for films with fictional giant scorpions in. There are actually quite alot. And now you tell me it is real,:argh: now I got to go back and check all the David Attenborough documentaries as well. Mike
  13. NO idea what the truck is but it reminds me of a still from one of those B movies. Mike
  14. Yup whilst one is nicking your lead, copper, aluminium etc the other one is busy nicking your ID. Mike
  15. Well that explains the proliferation of potholes then. The alternative is this but it has congestion implications. Mike
  16. Saw that also. There must be a snag. Its a long drive back from South Africa though Mike
  17. There is Ajmac's Loyd carrier. Built 1940's? and still serving as range targets till 2008. So that is a good 60 years of service. Mike
  18. Thats what the Governments website says. They can sit in the back but not the front. Don't know what happens if you have a child over 3, a vehicle without seatbelts but no back seats. Mike
  19. You never know it might be worse than it looks. Could do with a new spare tyre though.:-( Mike
  20. Now that is a good idea. Photoshop is the easy bit. 1. Acquire a G-Whizz. (electric so no fuel) 2. Get a load of cardboard from Tesco and a Big cardboard carpet tube. 3. Knock up a quick Tiger. 4. Post sepia grainy picture. 5. Convince Jack to allow it to A&E 2012. Mike
  21. He is right to comply with the law you can only carry children over 3 who are sitting in the rear seats and must wear the seat restraints/belts that are correctly fitted in the vehicle. As this is a DUKW I am assuming you have seats and as it is older than when rear seat belts had to be fitted, you don't need them. "You can't carry any children under three years old in vehicles without seatbelts, like classic cars. If you're travelling with children over three years old, they must only sit in the back seats." http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/roadsafetyadvice/DG_4022064 Mike
  22. You can see them there with their crach helmets off. So nothing that a quick change of underwear wouldn't fix. Mike
  23. IS the piccy from your truck? Do you have pistures inside the connectors as may help? If so do you have some history? Engine imersion heater sounds like the sort of thing for plugging into the mains to stop the block freezing in cold climates. Our Canadian members may know something on this point. The charger is possibly related as cold can kill batteries. These documents provides interesting reading, although more modern but may help with the pronciples http://www.scribd.com/doc/9686765/Operation-Maintenance-of-Ordnance-in-Cold-Weather-FM-9207 http://www.dstan.mod.uk/standards/defstans/23/008/00000200.pdf Mike
  24. The program Joris has suggested looks quite good especially if doing a lot of images. I tend to resize mine using Photo Shop Elements so the the largest dimension is 900 or 1200 pixels and then do a save as making sure image file size is below 1mb. I have experienced a few problems but when viewing the info provided for failure it turns out it has been my fault for cropping images and forgetting to resize. WARNING Always make sure the original photos are backed up. Mistakes can be very annoying (or worse). Mike
  25. Have managed to get my negative scanner working with Windows 7 So have been scanning a few more negatives in. Came across this one. Was taken at the former Melbourne Airfield between York and Hull and would have been around 1983-84. Not sure if it was a Willys or Hotchkiss but is/was an interesting conversion. Mike
