  1. I know its an old thread now but I love the inter war stuff, it really helps to explain the story of tank dvelopment when you can see the change from WW1 initial designs to the "modern" design of say the Vickers medium Mk3 design, which is fundamentally how its remainded ever since that said my favourite item is the Vickers light MkV1 - really brings home the obsolesence of our 1940 equipment: 0.5inch HMG as main gun versus a Panzer's 37mm, yet the tank exudes cavalry elan and I just keep picturing heroic flat out charges across the Libyan desert

ads in the MVT's green sheet will appear on line (eventually) war and peace website has classified section the others I know of cost money and are no longer have the dedicated MV sections they used to eg autotrader and expand and fart
  3. So far the (Thomsons) bricksealer I painted (by brush) on my canvas tarp has lasted 2 years and I would very much recommend it as a (very) cheap way to restore the waterproof qualities of an old canvas tarp. the one thing to be aware of is it makes the canvas very stiff so the canvas will no longer naturally sag if stretched over a gap or will not "mould" to the shape of the thing it is covering - ie it effectively converts the canvas into something more like a drumskin, but that said, the canvas will still be waterproof even if it is bent around a shape
  4. I have xzl fitted on my 101 - these are marked in the metric size (and sub marked as 9.00x16) - the 101 club users regard them as a good tyre which is much harder wearing than the XL but be aware however that, despite them being 9.00 x 16, they are physically a larger tyre than the original Dunlops and will affect your vehicle handling - on a 101 they significantly increase the effective gear ratios - don't know if that would matter on Ferret however the NDT are the standard Goodyear "bar tread" used on lots of softskins, they work well on Ferrets but make sure you get ones with a high ply rating - you'll also need flaps rather than the original run flat insert
  5. I have a carb that badly needs cleaning and have got an ultrasonic bath but never used it yet and don't know what fluid is best for a carb. My bath has a heater element. Any recommendations: - water and washing up liquid? - water on its own? - what else? ... of course I could always try petrol I suppose
  6. keep the authentic look, just slap on another coat over whats already there
  7. you do not need to remove the engine it is very possible to shift the gearbox forward but be careful not to crush any of the pipework (especially the brake pipe) running underneath it As it is a Mk1 it will be much easier if you have a crane because lining up the drive shaft when reassembling can be awkward
  8. too tired to explain - download the manuals from Andy's site and post back if anything is still unclear http://www.ferret-fv701.co.uk/manuals.htm
  9. not a bad price at all but unless you are transmitting on the radios you don't need 100amp, and even then OEM was 60amphr anyway. Will help starting for sure but watch you don't fry the wiring ! I have used a pair of type 072 batteries for years, bolting a round terminal connector to the original ferret flat ended cables is not an issue and leaves useful additional storage space inside the batt boxes for some odds and sods of gear
  10. too true, well done, I'm off to list my copy of same and see if your luck rubs off
  11. since the seller (not me!) is a member of this forum perhaps he might like to share some of his good fortune around...
  12. Nigel you have a PM, you can ignore the earlier PM I sent on the dugout forum
  13. Don't know how your machine actually works but looking at your pictures does it work when the run flat insert is present as that would make it very hard to push the bead/sidewall downwards as that is afterall what they were designed to stop, ie to force the beads apart not together. My local tyre fitter put so much pressure on the rim doing mine they put a kink/lip in the rim itself before they realised it was only alloy and not steel.
  14. See above, however if your vehicle is ex RAF, then the records are held by Hendon who provide a copy for free. Deepcut (RLC Museum) charge for army records as they are not so well funded as the Hendon museum.
  15. very interested in a visit, I'm just down the road from it too but never been there
  16. if this is of real interest to readers I will see what I can do - the chair of the friends is in my MVT group and should be able to pull the right strings BTW I have been a continuous member of the friends since 1987 but do not do any work down there as I can only go at weekends and they have more volunteers than they can cope with at weekends and get very selective about who they want in the workshops
  17. Interesting, what policy is that then, have things changed? A "standard" (define!) Autohome policy won't cover a car, will it, not exaclty a commercial vehicle within their policy definition? Certainly the policy I had from them which expired in May 2010 was very definitely for one vehicle only (my membership card had the vehicle reg printed on it)with a £1,000 max cover for all and any call out costs. They never did confirm (in writing) if that was per year or per call.
  18. but covered for what? their set up is no different to carrying around a few recovery company phone numbers, when you have a call out it will cost you a lot of dosh, before i went to Autohome it once cost me £545 to be recovered on a Sunday. I am not a great fan of insurance based policies (and am utterely illogical over them eg: I have no household insurance at all as "it" will never happen :cool2: ) but that was 5 years premiums in one go, so I got recovery cover from the next day because "it" will (?) happen again!
  19. yes but Autohome cover the vehicle, Gary wants cover for the person I am not aware of anyone who will offer "fleet" coverage for heavy vehicles (I'm with Autohome myself). Then again as stated since Gary's fleets falls into the below 3,500kg GVW then any of the domestic operations will do what he wants , especially for jeeps, AA RAC etc will have no issues with them other than their age From my own experience the RAC charges a £10 supplement for covering a "van" on my personal policy (this is how my 101 is covered), all my other stuff is over 3.5 t and therefore the likes of AA etc will not cover them and you are into the realms of cover on an individual named vehicle by vehicle basis, not personal cover
  20. I wondered if that was you or TTM stopped on the hard shoulder. Sadly I was late for work so could not stop to offer moral support - hope you got going again OK
  21. Oh dear oh dear what was I thinking when I let this be taken
  22. has Jolley addressed the overheating problem for the new coil? IIRC one of the Americans who fitted the "electronic" coil in the original housing found it failed very quickly, which was diagnosed as inadequate cooling for the coil, and feedback from Jolley said it should not be fitted in the housing but should be mounted outside? then again I do have the distinct feeling that we are doing his product testing for him and anyone who bought an earlier model of his kit would not get the same now, as he incorporates the latest feedback on why their earlier version failed (but does not pass that on to the original customers). Yes I have an original kit, but I have not used it yet, I await your user "trials" results with interest !
  23. it is the inherent problem with these systems - the cameras have to be fish eye to meet their design purpose for reversing use. I did ask about a "normal" camera but the importer said no one makes them for these sort of systems, ie 12/24v - you can get them for household security use at 240v but that's a lot of faff to convert the system to use them
  24. no point having 2 x Mk2, revert it to Mk1 (you can always put it back on when you sell it to those who think a "tank" must have a turret)
