  1. bearing in mind your location .. no thanks
  2. in a nutshell you're most common route is to be a card carrying member of a formally constituted re enactment group which holds public liability insurance in order to buy a VCR compliant replica weapon which is painted black. for example see this supplier's explanation of their terms of trade and their £325 L7A1 GPMG which they will sell you but only as an item which is painted red unless you meet the VCR conditions
  3. I have been a member of MVT for years and regard Windscreen as being beyond brilliant, however, being devil's advocate, whilst the calendar gives a pleasant 5 minutes looking at 12 pictures, once I have done that, I have no use for it, put it straight in the recycling and regard it as an expensive(?) waste of time and money producing it
  4. how about all the Ferrets in Aus and at least one in NZ, all made in Blighty even if they were sold direct down under and did not necessarily start off in Uk service
  5. That one has been on before at IIRC opening ask >£6,500. Obviously it did not sell. It's location in NI does not help, the quoted £400 transport cost notwithstanding. I know of owners who have paid upwards of £8k on professional restorers costs in addition to original purchase price, so who really knows what a Ferret is "worth"
  6. as Chris says, age is not related to the vehicle's Mark, in theory a Mk1 should be cheaper than the others, however it is also a matter of personal choice. Some people prefer a Mk 1 over the turreted versions because they are easier to get in/out and they are faster. If you are a good seller you will establish this and not allow the lack of a turret to be used to mark down the price :-\ When I said £4k I was thinking of a Mk1 which does not include fitted radio, will probably be missing a few interior boxes, and may need exterior tin bashing as well as obvioulsy a full service before driving away. Others prefer a Mk1/2 for ease of access with the added selling point the fixed turret means you can securely lock down the vehicle. those who want to get a kick from owning a "tank" will only ever buy a Mk2 hence the undoubted premium on their price (or Mk4 which will be at a further premium due to its comparative rarity) £4k would still be a very good buy for a Mk1 and as I said I would not ask less than £6k for my turreted ones, but would not expect to get even near that for my Mk1, but then I know how much it cost me in the first place :cool2:
  7. rather open ended! Age does not really affect it as the main visible difference is square drivers side ports rather than trapezoid shaped. If on the other hand meaning early as in fittings then this is relevant if its complete, for example, Larkspur complete set up will be less common so worth more - but at the expense of less good intercom hence many fit a Clansman intercom as well. If meaning early as in has more history or saw service in live troublespots of the old empire then depends if the next buyer puts a premium on that sort of thing, can't answer that as I have never decided how much I'd pay for that for the sake of some (emotive) ball park figures: - if you are buying then sub £4k is "good/great" for a complete runner :-D - if you are selling then not less than £6k :cool2:
  8. There was some emission out the back :sweat:but not huge amounts and, given the weather, not especially visible. However, there is no question about what was wrong - the brake bands and all the tinwork covering them were burningly hot to the touch so it was quite obviously that. Also confirmed by John Dews who smelled it himself as we drove past him, he decided it was a non mineral smell, (ie not oil), came over to have a look and asked if a brake was binding as it smelled like that to him The 4 calipers were obviously cold but the handbrake was not - the smell and heat was rather obviously inside the vehicle. Diagnosis confirmed :-D
  9. does this mean the HMVF trip is now off then as we can do it from our desktops?
  10. Lee can confirm as he has replaced the tyres on his Fox. As Richard says you cannot re-fit the Hutchinson inserts, see Lee's post here explaining the considerable effort he made to change them he is clearly now running on replacement Michelin tyres so he (or his tyre fitter) managed it somehow.
  11. :argh: I allowed a Ferret owner take mine round the Beltring arena. Coming back through the crowds afterwards the smell was awful and had a good few people asking what was wrong.
  12. confuzed! Apologies for butting in and not knowing the arrangements from last year, so the car sharing is for the Essex based mafia only :cool2: Others make their own way. I am happy to do so but would prefer to have a clear understanding of what is being arranged as obviously meeting up at a single point to do the car share is logistics problem and picking people on the way down adds to it.
  13. FWIW as I'm working in Canterbury in Feb, the driving time works against me for anything other than a channel crossing that said I live near Heathrow so if you fly its cheaper for me to go from there than get to Stanstead. must we travel as a group or can you go independently?
  14. very interested I didn't spot there had been one last year
  15. it's like anything with MV's - how much are you prepared to pay... one of the most often referenced sources is aircraft tyres in Belgium. No idea what price, you'll have to ask. (as a guide their 9.00x16 are over £200 each) http://www.aircrafttyres.com/Products%20and%20prices%20tyres.htm scroll down a bit as items are listed by size, their website shows they can source new 11.00x20 Michelin XL, but just cos the picture is on their website it does not mean they have any in stock, but should be able to supply alternatively the guy I bought my Fox from has listed his old tyres on here before, ie the ones he took off and replaced with the new ones on it now. They are OLD and unsurprisingly did not sell.
  16. :pfrt: ... just can't get the staff, you can add it to your list of vehicles you maintain and come and have another go at the gbox if you like, still not right :-D what about the painting you wanted - I was supposed to do it for you in August. :yay:
  17. OK I know there is a master switch but I forgot to turn it off so now have flat batteries I have previously noticed that with tghe igniotion turned off but with master still on the main beam (headlight) warning bulb glows very faintly clealry therefore I have a power drain despite the ignition circuit being off and its enough to flatten batteries over the course of 2 months anyone have any thoughts on cures (other than make sure you turn off the master switch next time )
  18. the war diary for my Dad's unit refers to vehicles in May 1945, after cessation of hostilities, when it spends a few days recording efforts to get Austin 3 tonners, which it had been issued with in connection with occupation duties, replaced as they were "worn out" for most of 1945 he was a rear area unit, so whilst they had the time they may not of had the priority for supplies, so possibility could not actually maintain them anyway
  19. they are not original kit, they are a variety of after market truck (24v) ones. A lot of us have fitted them for the sake of extra safety when on the move. as I'm sure one of the others will remind me however, the law says it is illegal to use them on a vehicle with a speed >25mph. The law is an ass, the relative speed difference bewteen Ferret and normal stuff on A roads or motorways means it is sensible to use it. fitting is anywhere you want, there is no "correct" place as they are not an original fitting, Similarly power source is from whatever takes your fancy, if you want fancy then fit a relay for the switch, otherside just do it direct from any ignition controlled source, or if really poor just plug it into the aux socket
