  1. that is precisely what I'm afraid of. I have left detailed instructions with my executor on how to go about advertising my stuff so that it is seen by the MV market not a general junk collector. I update it every now and them when a new possibility comes along (eg advertise on Milweb) but at the end of the day who knows what the executor will do as they won't have any emotional involvement in the stuff other than maximising its sale value
  2. it is very tempting to read the VRN on the one on the right of the second row as 00DA57.....
  3. first off it is an old Land Rover so the mechanicals are straightforward. The vehicle is robust and although a lot of parts are unique to a 101 they are not that expensive and are readily obtainable either through the Club or commercially the original V8 engine can be a pain to keep tuned because you need the right equipment to properly balance the twin carbs and its is neither road tax nor MOT exempt so proper maintenance really matters to ensure you pass. spark plugs depends on which vehicle type you have - a GS is a lot more accessible than an ambi so changing plugs has never been awkward for me once working the are reliable and as MV they have the great advantage of being extremely practical motors that can be used for many things, many of the owners in the club are not actually into the military side of things and use theirs for other applications especially as campers and overlanders/expedition, one or two use then as daily runarounds or as work vehicles so in that sense a 101 is very practical. Running costs are no worse than a similar MV (10mpg?) but that's a lot better than my Ferret - it's all relative and you could always convert to LPG if the need arises the Club will be the place to go if you need help, we are very friendly over there although it does get better if you are a paid up member ! http://www.101club.org/ PS - I'm biased, I'm the Club treasurer
  4. sorry Ivor can't help with your question but could you tell me the paint code for the Morris engine "green" as mine's in post war eau de nil and my anorak is shuddering not twitching
  5. YES, but not ones that can be posted on a public board. I no longer use his "services"
  6. it's a one piece Perspex moulding, you would not be able to make one yourself, it would be much easier just to get a flat piece of laminated glass cut to the size of the hatch
  7. as ever - depends how much you are willing to spend I was quoted £40 per valve to have brand new stellite exhaust valves reverse engineered from the broken one I would provide by this company who are highly recommended in classic car circles http://www.gsvalves.co.uk/ However in the end I actually got OEM ones off John Walker so did not proceed - I suspect G&S Valves' prices will have risen since then!!!!
  8. if on level ground then by definition the suspension should be relaxed. It would not be relaxed if, for example, there was a rock under a tyre so that wheel was raised (ie its suspension was under compression) or if the ground was uneven so one wheel station was under tension (ie pressing down to force the tyre to contact the bottom of the dip in the ground) you do not jack up a vehicle to fill, you do it with all 4 wheels on the ground
  9. long side bin - rare as the proverbial.... other bins - off the shelf supply non existent, odd ones may crop up but not when you want them and mostly in **** condition people who can (ie. not me!) have been fabricating new ones for themselves for sometime now. I have no idea if anyone has drawings already done up, see what others say when they reply to this
  10. with acknowledgement to the 101 Club forum, and apologies if already on HMVF somewhere, but the budget has extended the age exemption for VED to 1974. (Only 2 more years to go and my Fox becomes affordable again!) 2.148 VED: classic vehicle exemption – The Government will extend the cut off date from which classic vehicles are exempt from VED by one year. From 1 April 2014 a vehicle manufactured before 1 January 1974 will be exempt from paying VED. (Finance Bill 2014) Link to budget paper, its on page 84 for those that are interested. http://cdn.hm-treasury.gov.uk/budget2013_complete.pdf
  11. stop teasing us, we want the pictures :-)
  12. Lee, just to clarify as my original may be read both ways, I meant I was unaware of the existence of the separate TM forum itself, not the boards here on HMVF. I don't recall the TM forum being regularly promoted to FOTM by FOTM at the time to build up member engagement with it as I was already a member of HMVF there was, for me personally, no comparison between the 2 forums so no incentive to haunt the FOTM, so its passing did not really impact me. I was of course fully aware of the transfer over to HMVF for the reasons you outlined, ie. I clocked that because of my active engagement on HMVF, not because of promotion in Tracklink, although there almost certainly was some, but you don't really register afresh what you already know from elsewhere
  13. before I get told off, I have voted - just as well its not a secret ballot I too am a Life member of the Friends dating from 1987/88 can’t remember which. It’s how I got started in the vehicle game through the Friends programme of visits (more on this later). In accordance with the truism, first impressions last, when I joined the FOTM “seemed” to be run by a cadre of ex RTR as an adjunct of the officers mess and outsiders were just that. I sat back and was content to get the magazine and do the odd trip. There was no ability to get involved hands on hence I “defected” to Duxford and spent the whole of the 1990’s as volunteer up there every Sunday, sometimes Saturday too. Bovy and Duxford are about the same distance apart for me, though with the M11 Duxford is quicker, so it was possible to be hands on at either but there was no opportunity at Bovy. Decades go by and times change, Bovy opened up to workshop volunteers but attitudes appeared not to. I tried Bovy again but was made to feel unwanted as numbers were restricted and only “skilled” people need apply. Non workshop activity at the weekends did not appear available as warden or similar posts seemed to be mid week only. So again I went back to my hole and just read Tracklink each quarter. The visits programme also stopped as no one had the time, or more importantly, the contacts to get access to sites the public couldn't go to anyway. I have worked in finance all my life so it was obvious to me from the outset that the Friends was never going to matter to the TM financially as its admin costs were (and remain) simply too high to give any meaningful distributable surplus. So when the current furor blew up I must admit my thought was TM has a point. The FOTM is largely irrelevant to TM, if TM want hands on unpaid staff then you cannot blame them for what they are now doing in recruiting direct (particularly if they pay expenses!) as paying a FOTM sub is unnecessary if you end up doing TM work anyway (I’m out of touch obviously with how autonomous this is, ie controlled by TM or FOTM workshop “managers” (Duxford was/(is?) autonomous and it impacts the whole culture positively) Apologies if you think I’m negative, yes there is an undertone of rejection so my views are biased, but as a life member of the friends I see no future for them as anything other than a social network who get an interesting and informative magazine. With my day job hat on their charitable status is exposed. Would I join FOTM now? Answer: No, I would become a TM volunteer instead, but that is purely on the basis I am (just) physically close enough to get to Bovy and would end up doing the same thing on site anyway. however, if I could not attend site, then I would take FOTM, but purely for the “social” aspect, the Friends visits programme is now back and that in itself is worth every penny of a FOTM sub, but utterly irrelevant to TM. “Benefits” of FOTM membership: - Cost: £25 pa - Free entry to TM but crucially not on an event day where you have pay full price compared to Duxford where you do get in for free on events - Tracklink – a great read - Visits programme (but some of these are open to non members anyway) - TM shop discount As for the forum, you can see when I joined HMVF and my relative activity level. For a long time I had no idea there was a separate TM forum, I did eventually become a member of it but compared to HMVF there was little of interest on it and I did not even notice it closed down and moved here. I thought the boards on here were TM promoting TM so did not bother with them. Can't see any value in a dedicated FOTM board now.
  14. err, I have allowed people to use the Rarden barrel as a means to climb on board my Fox and I think this is why the elevation is now knackered, very stiff to elevate and only limited movement I realise it's hard to diagnose on such limited info, but I'd really appreciate suggestions as to what is involved in me servicing this, eg. am I looking at full gun removal and replacement parts or can anything be done with gun in situ in turret?
  15. my head fully agrees with Griff my wallet would always pick a Mk2 as people want to own a "tank" my heart decided the best solution was to get one of each :cool2:
  16. a lot of the black and white footage was taken form the documentary done on 17/21 lancers shots in late 1960s' - sadly no longer available on iplayer however did anyone record it? I can't get decent definition on iplayer to be able to see the VRN on the CVRWs that appear in the last 10 minutes , one of them appears to be xxFDxx but there are 2 others at least anyone have any ideas how to improve picture quality, I know you can't download to keep the programme or copy it but I'd dearly love a couple of screen shots to use as stills as part of a display board
  17. please ignore - hoave found existing thread on same topic Lee would you could delete this thread as i don't seem able to delete it myself ??
  18. Isn't it about time Jack bought a decent clubhouse for us to use, one with a bit of history to it as well? :cheesy: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-20880018.html?premiumA=true
  19. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_soap get the St Marc brand from France then, afterall you are neighbours so should support each other as for etch primer this appears to be an Italian company that sells it http://www.lechler.eu/on-line/Home/Infotecnicheedisicurezza/Industry/Prodotti/iartCatWashPrimereFondiPoliestere.1001403.500.100.html
  20. you need an Etch Primer paint relatively easy to find, just do a google, even Halfrauds stock it
  21. its a usable Ferret turret but not on a standard ferret base plate. Depends how much you want it . It clearly has the correct turret bearings so at the end of the day you could simply bolt it on top of another plate shaped to fit the ferret hull, depends on your attitude to originality versus "must" have a turret given its rectangular shape it is remotely possible that the base plate may be off: a) a Malaya ferret ie the one with the raised superstructure, or b) a Malaya emergency Dingo However those turrets should have split rear doors not the single flap one shown The turret was also used on Saracen, but I don't think saracen has a base plate like that
  22. please could someone describe the "correct" late war (1994 - 45) British cam net for NW Europe theatre- I assume Hessian, but would that be brown hessian strips or would they be coloured (ie green strips)
  23. yes I did read that - thanks for the update. Its like anything in product marketing, you refine your product and relaunch it in an improved version under new branding (at a higher price!). Was the day they recommended golden film 30 cos that's all they had, now as you say they have two 30s: detergent and non detergent. So the one with a bit of Fairy Liquid thrown in it shall be from now onwards (but after i finish the last of my golden film supplies of which I still have an unopened 25 L drum!)
  24. "ideal for later vehicles built from the early 1930s to the early 1960s with superior oil filtration systems" I suppose in its day the ferret nappy filter was superior, just not sure to what :cheesy:. Been using Millers oils since they were first recommended on here years ago
