  1. driver's Sterling is loose inside, not stowed, just goes (on the floor) wherever the driver wanted to put it as you have a GPMG Ferret you would not have had a Bren inside, although on 30 cal Mk2 there is one story of the crew having a Bren in the bracket as an additional demount weapon
  2. heat resistant paint on a Ferret silencer  gave up that battle years ago BTW Preston Issacs sells repros
  3. Anyone got any links or pics of CVRT Salamander or can explain what it is, I have a vague recollection it is a CVRT modified to look Soviet (?) - I have just collected a J60 engine backloaded (with a fault :-() from BATUS which is listed as ex 03FD00 CVRT Salamander from Batus and would like to know what it was actually off
  4. correct, my 1/2 served with 4FD and 25FD, (not really relevant to this thread however) which is in a sorry state but has some interesting fittings on the front that I have yet to find an explanation for, there are photos of mine rollers fitted in Cyprus but I remain unconvinced of that on a Mk1/2 no, the Malaysian "collar" has nothing to do with a 1/2, it was purely a local "invention"
  5. look at the dealer adverts on milweb http://www.milweb.net/dealers.php?catID=1
  6. the owner of that one never did establish who fitted the ladder (or the other mods on the vehicle, eg the front "bumper"), as it came from a Belgian dealer and it could have been done by them
  7. In Clive's Corner he has says there is no written evidence a regulation was ever issued requiring nuts to be painted white, http://www.hmvf.co.uk/pdf/PAINTINGpart3.pdf red only then - white is parade use
  8. Mk2 used on UN duty in Cyprus in the 1980's had their centre side bins removed and the hatch had the studs ground off - in addition to the photo evidence below, that is exactly the condition of my OODA57 (UNF554) as received direct from disposal sale
  9. Blimey Chris you do have a lot to learn! First lesson of a Ferret it does not have a front and rear axle, it has a left hand side and a right hand side pair of wheels Ferret is a permanent 4 wheel drive transmission. That means the wheel at the front left is linked to the wheel at the rear left by the propshafts connected to the transfer box. You cannot rotate it if only a single wheel is jacked up, if you can turn one wheel on its own it indicates you have a broken tanfer box or final drive you must lift both wheels on a single side off the ground if you want to turn one of them
  10. good luck! I was stopped at a supermarket forecourt once filling a single 20 litre jerrycan. I was told by the Sainsbury person that it was not an "approved" fuel container :argh: and their licence covered use of 5L plastic cans only. I asked him what did he think a jerrycan was designed for... since then I have noticed quite a lot of garages have stickers saying max size of metal can is 10L.
  11. all internally mounted / co-ax mounted GPMG have a fume extractor (the "pipe") instead of the normal flash suppressor seen on infantry versions, the carrying handle/barrel change lever is also removed and replaced by a smaller lever the common versions are: L37 - retains pistol grip (used in eg: Ferret and Fox turret mount) L8 - pistol grip removed, replaced by trigger mechanism designed to link with turret electrics (eg: Chieftain, etc)
  12. politics! Jim got fed up of the attitude of certain of the Yanks, the data is still out there however: Jim retained his own data and re-established (the non copyright) FH stuff here a "new" FH was set up here including pages from Jim's old site here Andy set up his own, much much better, website here large numbers of the same people carried on with Jim's forum under new management (SIRHC's) here
  13. Robin have you not been in touch with Colin Stevens who has researched all 124 Canadian Ferrets? He should be able to answer everything about the history of yours BTW he has just published a book listing them http://www.servicepub.com/
  14. re pigdogs query, there was a change to the Emers. For the outer joint the new method is to rotate the wheel so plug #28 is at either 10 or 2 o'clock and fill the outer hub till oil is at the level of that plug. This ensures that oil levels in the outer hub are actually correct. If you do it via the original method, ie using plug 24 as the fill level, it takes a long time to be certain that the level is true because of the delay in the oil getting past the needle rollers into the actual outer hub itself. does not matter if you move the vehicle or (obviously easier) jack up the wheel to get 10/2 o'clock position - assumes you are on level ground to start with
  15. Review by Jessica Womersley (26 days 8 hours ago) "Driving a real World War Tank is a surreal and empowering experience on its own but combining it with a paintball battle was insane! " Oh dear Oh dear Oh dear. I hope she is not related to you, if she is then please execise better control in future :coffee:
  16. twas on the radio tonite, Tesco and Asda announce 3p ut in petrol price following recent droips in wholesale prices all v good and well but the variation across the country is shocking, I'm paying 105.9 in Canterbury but back home in Surrey it's still 109.9
  17. Hi Robin Built as am ambulance from the start production started 12 Aug 1977 and was finished 16 Aug 1977 issued from the factory to the vehicle depot at Hinton, subsequent service history can be obtained from the club historian http://www.101club.org/ and the VRN is...... 74GJ66
  18. an injector is any form of syringe you can lay your hands on to (errr) inject oil, you can of course do it much more slowly using a normal oil can or messily using a funnel for the inner that means through plug hole 15, keep filling til oil flows out the same orifice. then walk away, let the levels settle and repeat the exercise at least once more to ensure the level is correct
  19. see my post #17 below there is no documentation for the gun, the paperwork relates to the person. either the gun is VCR compliant because it is painted in the approved "bright" (unrealistic) colours or, if it is black, it is held by a person who has the relevant reenactment membership paperwork. (The other "defences" under the Act are a bit unlikely for a vehicle on the road, eg theatrical use)
  20. much simpler way and free! post up the chassis number as the 101 club have now published the VRN for every chassis number ever built, it will take 60 seconds to look it up and post the result back here the club would also be very interested in knowing you have it over there as they try to keep the survivors register up to date for a LHD 12v the chassis will start 959.... if 24v, it will be 964....
  21. on the basis that OOEC55's card does not show the struck off details, I suspect that it is not the final card. There was a time when Bovy (ie tank musuem) only held the "historic" cards, as vehicles still in service in the 1980's had their "current" cards held by Ashchurch. Certainly I have 2 cards for each of my Ferrets and one covers the 70's and the other up to disposal and the more recent card came direct from Ashchurch via a contact I had at the time. When Ashchurch closed it is possible that Bovy did not receive every single card they held, so pigdog may have missing data, including obviously the disposal details.
  22. it is legal to continue to own it and keep it at your home it is illegal to: a) sell it to someone who does not meet VCR requirements b) have it in your possession outside your own home unless you are yourself VCR compliant
  23. True, but a new contract came in at 00EC30, thereafter they were Mk2/3. Somewhere out there however is the owner of 00EC13, my real stablemate
  24. in essence anywhere under the hull belly plate, but of course it is more predictable if you do it in line with the wheel station and also nearer/on the edge so the force is not bowing the middle of the belly plate
