Looks like a PZ-2, either early war by the looks of it, or later and used a command vehicle? From WHO The SS Division “Nord” was a German army unit of the Waffen-SS. It was formed as SS-Kampfgruppe “Nord” in February 1941 in Norway but it was turned into a division in September 1941. The division was composed of SS men used for garrison duties in Norway. It was transferred to Finnish Lapland prior to Operation Barbarossa as part of the German XXXVI Corps under AOK Norwegen. In July 1941 the division took part in Operation Silberfuchs with the German 169th Division and the Finnish 6th Division. Due to lack of training the soldiers were routed in the first attack against the Soviet forces at Salla. The division was later attached to the Finnish III Corps operating in the Kiestinki area. In September 1942 the division was renamed as the SS Gebirgs Division “Nord” (SS Mountain Division “the North”) and in October 1943 finally as the 6th SS Gebirgs Division “Nord”. In 1944 the division took part in the Lapland War against Finland. After pulling out of Finland the division was transferred to Denmark and later to Germany. I haven't looked at all of it since it started in 2009 and the last post was Feb. of this year, but most of the stuff they're digging up is personal items, rings, helmets, cantenes, belt buckles. etc. They also digging up a lot of human remains, not sure how I fell about that. There's been some arguing i n the thread, some are calling it plain old grave robbing. Others are approving of the fact that their is purportedly some effort being made to repatriate the remains. According to the article, the vehicle was found on land that was a former military site now going to be developed into a golf course (?!). It's in very good condition with the outer hull pretty much intact (due in part to the cold temps & low sodium content of that sea). She was lost with all hands so is considered a war grave. draganm Posted September 12, 2015 Share Posted September 12, 2015 it's been done, they raised a WW2 U-boat, abandoned by crew after depth charge attack from maritime patrol aircraft, because everyone was sure it was full of Nazi gold. Unfortunately for the investors , who put in millions, there was nothing there but rust. Sat outside in the elements for a long time, eventually sectioned (cut) into 3 or 4 pieces and turned into an amusement park of sorts. If you consider that the S-boat is costing KW 5 million pounds, Then thought of anyone spenindg the tens of millions of pounds to lift and restore this thing is hard to imagine. WCMatt Posted September 12, 2015 Share Posted September 12, 2015 'Never said anything about raising one but that always struck me as odd that that's the first thing people think about whenever a submarine wreck is found. Aside from potentially being someone's grave, the boat has been sitting in a corrosive enviornment for the better part of a century (for the WWII boats anyway) and a full 100 for the great war ones. There's nothing there but a big blob of rust. Yes the U534 was raised (in the early 90s) and it's a shame to see what it has become but there were a few others that were raised (U3503 comes to mind) just after the war & in some cases, pressed back into service by new owners. Vehicle underwater is actually the remains of a STUG-III (Ausf-G) with the saukopf mantlet. Probably the wreckage of was dragged out onto the ice to let the spring thaw take care of clean up. The video is recent footage of Lockheed Martin's new Warrior Turret on firing trials in Scotland. Unfortunately the target tanks looks like a Cromwell and Challenger.
