Sisu Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 (edited) Hi, I need some info on building such system. Is the most basic construction such, that in the diesel engine exhaust manifold some coolant is injected and this generates a lot of smoke? So, basically the smoke would come out from the exhaust pipe. What if I wanted to have separate ducts for the smoke generation and keep the exhaust "clean", anyone have any examples how to build one? Something simple of course  I would have about 50-100 L tank just for the smoke system, normal coolant seems to be the easiest solution for the smoke generation, eh? I would need it for show purposes only... Edited July 27, 2008 by Sisu Quote
Tony B Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 I belive the mix is washing up liquid and disiel squirted into the exhaust, at least that's what is used on armoured limos. Quote
STRIKE AND RETURN 460 Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Hi are you looking for the Generator Smoke Mechanical M2 I have orginal ww2 pm for more details Quote
TooTallMike Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Or just buy a smoke machine from a entertainment industry equipment suppliers or Ebay. Much cheaper, lightweight, self-contained and designed for the job. That's if you don't want to make it yourself of course . - Mike Quote
fv1609 Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Some British smoke generators just burnt white lubricating oil, OM-17 Quote
ArtistsRifles Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 The system on my OT just dumps neat Diesel into the rather hot exhaust system - hey presto - instant clouds of thick white smoke!!! Quote
Richard Farrant Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 or on a petrol engine just pump in neat Redex in carb intake. Knew someone who used to have a Wesco oil can plumbed in to the intake hose :cool2: Oh damn.......they'll all be at it now Quote
Mark Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 The system on my OT just dumps neat Diesel into the rather hot exhaust system - hey presto - instant clouds of thick white smoke!!! Instant and very expensive clouds of thick white smoke :??? Quote
ArtistsRifles Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 Instant and very expensive clouds of thick white smoke :??? Probably!! Perhaps one day I'll get a chance to find out????? Quote
Stormin Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 Probably!! Perhaps one day I'll get a chance to find out????? Maybe to hide the testers tape measure after a slightly over width vehicle is apprehended on the roads. Quote
ArtistsRifles Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 Maybe to hide the testers tape measure after a slightly over width vehicle is apprehended on the roads. Ah - but it's NOT over-width.. From what I've read on the DVLA/VOSA sites (mainly VOSA) it falls under STGO Class 2 regs which mean as it's over 2.55 m but less than 3.20 m wide it can be used on the road provided a max speed of 20 mph is observed and the relevant police authorities are notified at least 2 days in advance of the proposed route and timing for the trip. I've no problem in complying with these requirements. Had it been over 3.2 m I'd have needed an escort vehicle too.... Still would like a chance someday to see how the other systems inc. the smoke discharger work though.... Quote
abn deuce Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 nay not to hide the tape but to make his escape ! Quote
Tony B Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 The local plod will just LOVE you. :-D 'Hello, just phoning to tell you I'm off down the local petrol station. Expect major holdups for the next three hours or so'. Joys of beurocracy , to screw things up, legally! Quote
Sisu Posted July 31, 2008 Author Posted July 31, 2008 Wow, a lot of replies - I'm astonished! Sorry I wasn't able to reply sooner... I'm kind of a DIY guy, so I'd like to build one myself. Also I'm not too impressed by the models that are made for the entertainment business, as I want to cover a large area as fast as possible (please don't call Greenpeace). Very interesting info from everyone, my preference would be to get the smoke from separate system rather than through the truck's exhaust system - if possible, unless the engine's heat could be used for smoke generation. I would place two large ducts (one per side) and with a press of a button I could send the clouds on either side. The cost of diesel etc. is not a limiting factor, just have to create a big effect I think I need to find some drawings of similar installation, as I told I have some space for the system (2160x400mm and 400mm high). Strike&Return; PM sent... Many thanks! Quote
